iPhone temporarily bests Android, at least in the UK

The iPhone had a huge October in England, roundly defeating Google's Android operating system.?

Earlier this month, Google announced that it was logging 550,000 Android activations a day, up from half a million in June and 400,000 in May. In the US, Android is inescapable: It has bested Apple in both sales and app downloads, and according to?the most recent Nielsen?report, Android phones currently account for 43 percent of the?US?market.

For those keeping track at home, in the previous quarter, Android devices accounted for only 39 percent of the American market. In other words, Android leapt up six big percentage points in the US, while Apple managed to stay pretty level, and BlackBerry weathered a dip.?(In an interesting twist, not only does Android dominate the US market, but it also serves as a big fat target for mobile malware developers.)?

But across the pond, things are very different indeed. In a new report, analytics firm?Kantar Worldpanel estimates that the iPhone accounted for more than 43 percent of all smartphone sales in the UK in October. By comparison, Android phones took only 35 percent. It's worth noting here that Android still powers the majority of UK smartphones, just as it does in the US. This just accounts for newly purchased phones.

But the sales figures do seem to represent a major coup for Apple ? as well as a neat flip of the situation stateside, where Android still reigns triumphant.?

"The October launch of the hugely anticipated iPhone 4S has catapulted Apple into second place among operating systems based on the last 12 weeks of sales," Kantar Worldpanel rep Dominic Sunnebo told the Guardian.?"However, if you just look at the month of October, Apple took a whopping share of all smartphone sales, giving it a significant lead over Android ? a feat many thought was impossible."

So will Apple manage to maintain its momentum? Doubtful. It took a major release for Apple to pull ahead. And, over at GigaOm,?Darrell Etherington wonders if?Apple?s October gains won't "give way to Android successes on the back of devices like the?new Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the first smartphone packing Ice Cream Sandwich." Still, Etherington points out, Apple will be just fine.?

The iPhone, he writes, "likely isn?t done posting big sales, especially since it?s?high on people?s lists?in terms of ideal gifts for the holidays, but it?ll have more competition in the coming months. It?ll be interesting to see whether Apple can continue gaining back share in the face of the Android juggernaut, or whether this spike is just a one-time blip on the radar."

Tribunal says suspected Russian spy can stay in UK (AP)

LONDON ? A special immigration tribunal ruled Tuesday that a Russian former lawmaker's aide who was accused of being a spy can stay in Britain.

The tribunal concluded that Ekaterina Zatuliveter ? who had an affair with her boss, a British lawmaker ? was not a threat to national security despite government claims.

The commission's 28-page ruling left open the small possibility that Zatuliveter might be a Russian agent.

"We cannot exclude the possibility that we have been gulled," the report from judge John Mitting states. "But, if we have been, it has been by a supremely competent and rigorously trained operative."

The three-person panel concluded this was highly unlikely based on her education and training.

The 26-year-old Russian woman was arrested in December on suspicion of using her job in the office of legislator Mike Hancock to pass information to Russian intelligence. Zatuliveter admitted she had a four-year affair with her boss, a Liberal Demcocrat who served on the sensitive Defense Committee, but said she was not a secret agent.

She has not been charged with spying but British authorities wanted to deport her as a threat to national security. Much of the evidence was heard in secret, so the details of the case against her have not been made public.

A Home Office spokesman who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government policy said officials are disappointed by the ruling and stand by the decision to seek Zatuliveter's deportation.

"The court ruled that there were ample grounds for suspicion, we are therefore very disappointed by the court's judgement and stand by our decision to pursue deportation on national security grounds," the spokesman said.

Hancock has stepped down from the Defense Committee but has not commented publicly on the allegations.

Nielsen's Q3 numbers are out: Android's still atop the OS chain, Apple remains number one manufacturer

Another quarter has come and gone, and you know what that means: Nielsen ratings are out again. The latest batch of numbers don't reveal anything wildly new, but they're still just as telling nonetheless: 44 percent of mobile subscribers in the US use a smartphone in the US. Of those, 71 percent are in possession of an Android device or an iPhone. Additionally, 56 percent of all phone purchases during the third quarter were smartphones. And -- this probably won't come as a surprise to anyone -- at a decisive 42 percent, Android remains the number one smartphone OS while Apple is still perched firmly on top as the leading manufacturer (28 percent). Check out the source link below and graph above for more of the tiny details.

Feds crack down on sellers of fake goods (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The knockoff designer bags look close enough to the real thing that few would notice at a casual glance. Same goes for the imitation replica football jerseys or popular boots. And the online prices seem too good to pass up.

But the products are fake and the websites selling them are breaking federal law by selling copies of high-end merchandise without giving credit or money to the real designers and creators. And while the products can look as good as the real thing, federal authorities warn that buying fake merchandise can be dangerous.

"Not only is this is a direct threat to American innovation ... but it's also a public safety issue," Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director John Morton said Monday as he announced that the government had shut down 150 websites accused of selling counterfeit merchandise.

Attorney General Eric Holder and Rebecca Blank, acting deputy Commerce secretary, are set to launch a campaign Tuesday at the White House to alert the public to the dangers of buying counterfeit goods.

"This is increasingly not simply a matter of `mom and pop' violations at the corner of Fourth and Main," Morton said Monday. "We are worried about organized crime and (that profits) are going to fuel other criminal activity."

Morton would not say if organized criminal groups are suspected of running any of the seized sites to help fund other criminal acts.

Some counterfeit goods, including medications and electronics, can also pose a health risk, Morton said.

Morton and Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer, who leads the Justice Department's criminal division, said Monday that in the latest crackdown authorities seized 150 website domain names where fake goods were being sold to unsuspecting bargain hunters.

"This is straight crime," Morton said. "This is people being duped into buying a counterfeit."

The federal government has seized the domain names of 350 websites since first targeting online counterfeiters in June 2010. Each investigation, Morton said, has grown.

Visitors to the seized domains are now greeted with a message from federal authorities explaining that the site has been seized by the government and a warning that "willful copyright infringement is a federal crime."

Morton and Breuer said while the domain names were registered in the United States, most of the websites were run from abroad, primarily in China. No one has been charged with a crime in connection with the most recently seized domains. But Breuer said the investigations are ongoing.

Earlier this year five people were indicted in Virginia on conspiracy and copyright infringement charges for their roles in operating a website that the Justice Department said allowed people to illegally download high-quality movies and television shows.

Four people accused of running NinjaVideo.net have pleaded guilty. A fifth person is being sought.

It's unclear how much money the seized sites have made, or potentially cost legitimate companies. Breuer said since the crackdown on counterfeit sellers started last year, Internet users have gone to the seized domains more than 77 million times.

"Typically we don't track the volumes of sales of these particular sites," Morton said, adding that criminal organizations often hide ill-gotten profits. "It is very large figures. Well, well above millions."

Germany: UN should endorse Syria sanctions (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? The Security Council should endorse the Arab League's weekend decision to slap sanctions on Syria for its eight-month crackdown on civilians, Germany's ambassador said Monday.

"The decision of the Arab League was a really remarkable if not historic decision," said Ambassador Peter Wittig, whose country is among the 15 council members. "It was a reaction to the brutal crackdown ? and the message of course is clear. If (President Bashar) Assad doesn't heed the call, then there will be biting sanctions.

"I think the council cannot stand idly by regarding what the regional organization has said so strongly: the council should take up that decision and endorse and reinforce it. We are going to deliberate about this in the course of the day."

The Arab League actions include cutting off transactions with Syria's central bank, and would further squeeze a national economy already under sanctions by the U.S. and the European Union.

No formal action regarding Syria was on the Monday agenda for the Security Council, which was holding meetings on Yemen and Libya.

Last month, Russia and China vetoed a Western-backed U.N. Security Council resolution condemning the bloodshed in Syria, arguing that NATO misused a previous U.N. mandate authorizing the use of force in Libya.

Chinese Ambassador Li Baodong told reporters Monday that his country has not changed its position on Syria.

The U.N. General Assembly's human rights committee last week voted overwhelmingly to condemn human rights violations by Assad's government and called for an immediate end to all violence. The resolution is nonbinding, however.

The nongovernmental rights group Amnesty International on Monday called on the far more powerful Security Council to impose its own sanctions on the country, including an arms embargo and a freeze of Assad's assets.

It also wants the council to refer the situation to the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, the U.N. war crimes tribunal.

"Amnesty International believes that Syria is unable or unwilling to open an impartial, independent investigation" into the crackdown, Maha Abu Shama, a rights campaigner for the organization, told a Monday briefing on the situation.

"Syrian security forces have committed human rights violations with impunity for decades," she said.

The United Nations estimates at least 3,500 people have been killed on all sides since the protests in Syria began in March. Amnesty International said it has obtained the names of more than 3,200 people, including more than 190 children, who reportedly have been killed in the unrest during that period.

Soap Dish: OLTL & AMC On Line Future Is Kaput!

Welcome to this week?s edition of Soap Dish. There really is only one thing to dish about this week, the future of All My Children and One Life To Live online has been suspended or as I like to call it kaput. By now it is no secret that that powers that be at Prospect Park have put their plans to further develop AMC and OLTL online on hold indefinitely. Their reasoning? Too many obstacles to overcome including AFTRA issues, even though the actors? guild that supports soap opera actors/actresses tells a different story, those are the reasons being given. I have a couple of issues with how all of this went down. Once it was announced the shows would be moving online the ending of each show on ABC was altered to make that transition smooth. So that sucks that fans will not get better endings or the closure they deserve. That isn?t even my biggest thing to complain about, it is what the back and forth has done to fans like me. First ABC axed both shows. Then they were given new life by Prospect Park via The Online Network, now they are ?suspended?. Talk about putting a [...]

(AP) ? Toyota began taking orders Tuesday for the plug-in version of its hit Prius hybrid, announcing efficient mileage and a relatively affordable starting price of 3.2 million yen ($41,000), which comes down with green vehicle subsidies.

Toyota is targeting Prius Plug-in sales of 35,000 to 40,000 a year in Japan, and 60,000 globally. The car is set for delivery in Japan in January. With subsidies the cost comes down to 2.75 million yen ($35,200). It starts at $32,000 in the U.S. and 37,000 euros in Europe, according to Toyota.

Japan's top automaker says the plug-in, which it calls the Prius PHV, is for those who want something more innovative than a regular gasoline-electric hybrid, but are worried about running out of power on the road, as can happen with pure electric vehicles.

When a plug-in runs out of power to keep the electric vehicle going, it becomes a hybrid.

"The plug-in is the premier next-generation ecological car that will follow the hybrid," said Executive Vice President Takeshi Uchiyamada, the Toyota Motor Corp. engineer known as the "father of the Prius."

The Prius Plug-in has an estimated electric vehicle cruise range per charge of 26.4 kilometers (16 miles), according to Toyota.

Its mileage is estimated at 61 kilometers per liter for Japanese test conditions, which converts to a whopping 143 miles per gallon. Such numbers vary depending on road conditions. Toyota is promising 87 mpg for the U.S. Prius Plug-in, which will be delivered starting in March. Orders are already being taken online in the U.S.

Green cars such as the Prius Plug-in are expected to take centerstage at the Tokyo Motor Show, which opens to the public this weekend.

Japanese consumers have taken to the Prius, despite a languishing auto market overall, thanks to government-backed subsidies. Nations around the world are offering similar perks, boosting its chance for success.

The Prius Plug-in, which seats five people, comes with a new lithium-ion battery that can be charged from a household outlet, much like an electric car. It also recharges itself while driving like a gasoline-electric hybrid. The battery is more powerful and compact so the back trunk fits three golf bags.

Uchiyamada told reporters that the plug-in was the best solution for green cars as most Japanese don't drive more than 20 kilometers (12 miles) a day and Toyota studies showed that most people don't want to use EVs for drives longer than 100 kilometers (60 miles).

How the plug-in fares in coming months will help show whether Toyota can keep riding on its success of the Prius as a global leader in green technology. Toyota said it had collected data from 600 people around the world who had leased the plug-in on a trial basis.

Toyota has sold more than 3.4 million hybrids worldwide so far, including models other than the Prius.

Selling in big numbers is important because it helps cut costs and allows the automaker to offer products at affordable prices.

Honda Motor Co., which has also been aggressive with hybrid technology, has sold 770,000 hybrids worldwide.

Nissan Motor Co., which hasn't released a global hybrid sales number, is banking more on pure electric, selling 17,500 Leaf cars around the world so far.

In Japan, Toyota will work on services with its housing unit to support plug-in owners' charging stations, it said.

Studies show birth control pill lowers ovarian cancer, increases ...

Birth control pills may help decrease the risk of ovarian cancer in women but increase the risk for breast cancer.

A study in the British Journal of Cancer showed for every 100,000 women on the pill for 10 years, there are 50 extra cases of breast cancer and 12 fewer cases of ovarian cancer. The risk of ovarian cancer is therefore almost halved for users.

Lori Wangberg, a health educator and HIV counselor at Central Michigan University Health Services, said there has been research over the past several decades on oral contraceptive use and cancer risk.

?While research has found that oral contraceptive use might decrease the risk of ovarian cancer, research supports a strong link between oral contraceptive use and an increase in breast cancer risk,? she said. ?Certain types of cancer rely upon higher levels of hormones to activate tumor growth and development. ?

The question many women now face is whether to risk not developing ovarian cancer, but in turn possibly be diagnosed with breast cancer.

Wangberg said it depends on the woman?s family history.

?If there is a strong family history of breast cancer or strong family history of ovarian cancer, it is critical to have that discussion with their healthcare provider, and provide honest and accurate information at the appointment,? she said.

Women also need to be aware that oral contraceptives do not offer protection against sexually-transmitted infections, Wangberg said. The HPV virus, which is transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, is linked to cervical cancer.

She said condoms can be helpful in reducing the risk, but it is important to remember that HPV can still be transmitted through the areas of the skin the condom does not cover.

Troy junior Sienna Violett said she knows the risks of taking the pill, but still takes it religiously.

?I?m not worried about getting or not getting cancer from the pill because I think it?s all in your genetics,? she said. ?If I am going to get cancer it will just happen and I don?t think the pill will play that big of a role.?

Violett said she takes the pill every day at 8 p.m. and has an alarm set on her phone as a reminder.

?I?ve been taking the pill for two years, but I don?t take it to reduce my cancer risk,? she said. ?It is more for health reasons and I think it?s more effective by taking it at the same time every day.?

Wangberg said the risks of taking the pill include increased blood pressure, heart disease and an increased risk for blood clots.

The European Prospective Investigation of Cancer also showed evidence that having a baby reduces the risk of ovarian cancer.

Wangberg said based on some research studies, the less active the ovaries are (non-ovulation), in theory, the risk goes down.

The most common signs of ovarian cancer are bloating in the lower belly and pelvic area, pelvic pain or discomfort, nausea, indigestion and an increase in size of the abdominal area, Wangberg said.

While these symptoms are typical of ovarian cancer, she said it is important to remember these symptoms can be associated with other illnesses.

Futures rise in electronic trade on Europe hopes (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? U.S. stock futures jumped in early electronic trading on Sunday on the latest round of proposals out of Europe designed to corral the growing euro zone debt crisis.

U.S. stocks suffered their worst week in two months last week. The lack of a credible solution to Europe's debt crisis kept investors away from risky assets and downgrades of Belgium and Hungary added to the gloom.

Germany and France are exploring radical ways to integrate euro zone countries in order to impose tighter budget control. In addition, media reports that the International Monetary Fund was preparing a rescue plan for Italy bolstered sentiment.

S&P 500 futures rose 21 points. Dow Jones industrial average futures gained 146 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures were up 26 points.

The U.S. market's seven-day losing streak attracted early short-covering as Asian markets traded higher and the euro rebounded from recent losses. But recent rallies on hopes for a solution have not lasted long.

Last week, the S&P 500 fell 4.7 percent, giving back almost two-thirds of its gains in October, the market's best month in 20 years. The Dow was off 4.8 percent for the week and the Nasdaq fell 5.1 percent.

Medicare back on the brink over cuts to doctors

WASHINGTON (AP) ? It's become a symbol of sorts for the federal government's budget dysfunction: Unless Congress acts before Jan. 1, doctors will again face steep Medicare cuts that threaten to undermine health care for millions of seniors and disabled people.

This time it's a 27.4 percent cut. Last year, it was about 20 percent. The cuts are the consequence of a 1990s budget law that failed to control spending but was never repealed. Congress passes a temporary fix each time, only to grow the size of reductions required next time around. Last week's supercommittee breakdown leaves the so-called "doc fix" unresolved with time running out.

A thousand miles away in Harlan, Iowa, Dr. Don Klitgaard is trying to contain his frustration.

"I don't see how primary care doctors could take anywhere near like a 27-percent pay cut and continue to function," said Klitgaard, a family physician at a local medical center. "I assume there's going to be a temporary fix, because the health care system is going to implode without it."

Medicare patients account for about 45 percent of the visits to his clinic. Klitgaard said the irony is that he and his colleagues have been making improvements, keeping closer tabs on those with chronic illnesses in the hopes of avoiding needless hospitalizations. While that can save money for Medicare, it requires considerable upfront investment from the medical practice.

"The threat of a huge cut makes it very difficult to continue down this road," said Klitgaard, adding "it's almost comical" lawmakers would let the situation get so far out of hand.

There's nothing to laugh about, says a senior Washington lobbyist closely involved with the secretive supercommittee deliberations. The health care industry lobbyist, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to make public statements, said lawmakers of both parties wanted to deal with the cuts to doctors, but a fundamental partisan divide over tax increases blocked progress of any kind.

The main options now before Congress include a one-year or two-year fix.

The problem is the cost. Congress used to add it to the federal deficit, but lawmakers can't get away with that in these fiscally austere times. Instead, they must find about $22 billion in offsets for the one-year option, $35 billion for the two-year version. A permanent fix would cost about $300 billion over 10 years, making it much less likely.

"It's going to be a real challenge, and there's not a lot of time to play ping-pong," said the lobbyist. "It's entirely possible given past performance that Congress misses the deadline."

Congressional leaders of both parties have said that won't happen. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., says the Medicare fix is too important not to get done. But how? The endgame for a complex negotiation also involving expiring tax cuts, unemployment benefits and dozens of lesser issues remains unclear.

"They have to come up with a solution, and they will have to appear to pay for that solution, and that will be contentious," said economist Robert Reischauer, one of the public trustees who oversees Medicare and Social Security financing. One option: cut other parts of Medicare. Another: trim back spending under the health care overhaul law. Either of those approaches would mobilize opposition.

A nonpartisan panel advising lawmakers is recommending that doctors share the pain of a permanent fix with a 10-year freeze for primary care physicians and cuts followed by a freeze for specialists. Doctors aren't buying that.

The Obama administration says seniors and their doctors have nothing to fear.

But doctors are becoming increasingly irritated about dealing with Medicare. Surveys have shown that many physicians would consider not taking new Medicare patients if the cuts go through. Some primary care doctors are going into "concierge medicine," limiting their practice to patients able to pay a fee of about $1,500 a year, a trend that worries advocates for the elderly.

Ultimately, the solution is an overhaul of Medicare's payment system so that doctors are rewarded for providing quality, cost-effective care, said Mark McClellan, an economist and medical doctor who served as Medicare administrator for President George W. Bush. That continues to elude policymakers.

Instead, the threat of payment cuts has become a holiday tradition, said McClellan. "It's just not a very enjoyable one."

From 'Team of Rivals' to TR (Politico)

President Barack Obama said during the 2008 campaign that the most essential book in his White House ? other than the Bible ? would be Doris Kearns Goodwin?s ?Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.? Goodwin?s 2005 book is a history of Lincoln and his Cabinet, depicting Lincoln as an extraordinary leader in part because he was able to win over his onetime political opponents and enlist them to help save the Union. It?s not hard to see why the book resonated with Obama, who has often cited Lincoln as a personal political influence.

On ?Meet the Press? this morning, Goodwin offered a different political model for Obama as he heads into a difficult reelection campaign: Teddy Roosevelt. She explained:

I think the post-partisanship has to go. That is what he came in hoping for, it proved not able to work. But if you look back at Roosevelt, FDR, he first tried to be a bipartisan leader, and then he got so hurt by the rancor of the Republican right, who called him a traitor to the class, that he went right after them, and he wins in a landslide. You know, "The forces of entrenched greed hate me. I welcome their hatred." I don't think that'll work for Obama because he's not a warrior, a happy warrior in that way. But there is a model for him in Teddy Roosevelt. Similar time to our, squeeze middle class, up and down gap between the rich and the poor. And what he does is say, "I like corporations as long as they do well by us. I like union?unions as long as they do well for us. But if they start screwing around with us, I'm going after them." And he called for a square deal, fundamental fairness. And that's where the country's at right now. When Obama first talked about the failure of the supercommittee, when he put out his grand proposal, it was the idea that people want fairness, they want balance. That's what Teddy Roosevelt was all about. Every sentence was balance.?

A shift in emphasis from conciliation and consensus, to fairness and balance, would be a subtle but significant one. It?s fair to wonder whether Teddy Roosevelt, who came to office in a moment of national crisis, amid rising anger over the uncontrolled influence of banks and other entrenched interests, would have been a more effective role model for Obama all along.?He's a president that Obama's 2008 opponent, John McCain, has tried at times to emulate, quoting TR in his own efforts to curb ?malefactors of great wealth? in the present day.

We may hear Goodwin ? for whom I once worked as a researcher ? develop this theme further over the next year. The Washington Speakers Bureau notes on her speaker page that she?s currently working on a book about ?the progressive era focusing on Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft and the golden age of journalism to be published in 2012.?

You Are Here: Home ? Lead Story, Oil & Gas ? Sinopec to pre-finance, build first Ghana gas plant ahead of $3b China loan disbursement

Page last updated at Friday, November 25, 2011 16:16 PM //

Chinese firm Sinopec International?Petroleum Service Corporation says it will be pre-financing the construction of Ghana?s first gas infrastructure scheduled to be completed by 2012 end after it signed an agreement with the Ghana National Gas Company (Ghana Gas).

Officials said November 24, 201 that the gas infrastructure, including a gas processing plant to be sighted in the Western Region, is fully funded from a $3 billion loan provided by the China Development Bank (CDB) to the Ghana government but the start of work will be pre-funded by Sinopec.

In a government statement, Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Gas, Dr George Sipa-Adjah Yankey, explained that ?while it will be funded from the China Development Bank (CDB) facility approved by Parliament in August this year, the Chinese firm will pre?finance the start of work pending the release of the funds by the CDB.?

?This means that there?ll be no time wasted, and we have taken all the necessary steps to ensure that the gas infrastructure is put in place as soon as possible while holding ourselves in readiness for the disbursement of the CDB facility?, said Dr Yankey

The statement said Ghana should have a functioning gas processing plant and infrastructure linking the FPSO to the processing plant and to Aboadze and Prestea through Esiama by December 2012.

?Sinopec will construct and commission the 150 MMSCFD Gas Processing Plant, a 36-?kilometre shallow water offshore pipeline from the FPSO to the Plant, a 120-?kilometre onshore pipeline from the gas processing plant to Aboadze, a 75?kilometre onshore pipeline from Esiama to Prestea, a jetty for the export of natural gas liquids and an operations and control office complex,? the statement said.

Dr Yankey, according to the statement said French company, Technip, has been contracted and is working on the engineering design of the gas processing plant while Intecsea/Worley Parson of Houston, USA, is handling the engineering design of the offshore pipeline from the FPSO to the gas processing plant, which is almost complete.

Pope calls for responsible, credible climate deal (AP)

VATICAN CITY ? Pope Benedict XVI called Sunday for delegates attending this week's U.N. climate change conference in South Africa to craft a responsible and credible deal to cut greenhouse gases that takes into account the needs of the poor.

Some 25,000 government officials, lobbyists and scientists are expected to attend the two-week conference that opens Monday in Durban. The immediate focus is the pending expiration of the Kyoto Protocol, the 1997 agreement requiring 37 industrialized countries to slash carbon emissions to 5 percent below 1990 levels by 2012.

Western governments are expected to try to get China and other growing economies to accept legally binding curbs on greenhouse gases, as well. Poor countries want the signatories to accept further reductions in a second commitment period up to at least 2017.

Benedict, who has been dubbed the "green pope" for his environmental concerns, launched an appeal Sunday to government representatives attending the Durban conference to craft a responsible revised Kyoto deal.

"I hope that all members of the international community agree on a responsible and credible response to this worrisome and complex phenomenon, taking into account the needs of the poorest and future generations," he said during his traditional Sunday blessing from his studio overlooking St. Peter's Square.

Benedict denounced the failure of world leaders to agree to a successor treaty to Kyoto during a 2009 U.N. climate summit in Copenhagen. He said then that world peace depends on safeguarding God's creation.

The 84-year-old German pope has voiced increasing concern about protecting the environment in his encyclicals, during foreign trips, speeches to diplomats and in his annual peace message. Under Benedict's watch, the Vatican has installed photovoltaic cells on its main auditorium to convert sunlight into electricity and has joined a reforestation project aimed at offsetting its CO2 emissions.

For the pontiff, it's a moral issue: Church teaching holds that man must respect creation because it's destined for the benefit of humanity's future. He has argued that climate change and natural catastrophes threaten people's rights to life, food, health and ultimately peace.

Michelle Williams talks Marilyn, Matilda and musicals (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Michelle Williams takes on the iconic role of Marilyn Monroe in the indie film "My Week with Marilyn." Currently in theaters, the film is based on Colin Clark's book of the same name and chronicles his time spent working with Monroe while she was in England shooting the romantic comedy "The Prince and the Showgirl" in 1956.

Williams sat down with Reuters to talk about portraying Monroe, the film, shooting her current role of Glinda the good witch in Sam Raimi's "Oz: The Great and Powerful" and her six-year-old daughter Matilda with late actor Heath Ledger.

Q: Did you have an awareness of Marilyn Monroe and her starpower when you were younger?

A: "I was interested in her, but then I kind of lost track of her over the last 10 years or so. I had a poster of her up in my room. It wasn't a picture of her as the icon, it was a picture of her looking like an ordinary joyful girl. So I definitely had some kind of connection. (Working on this film) reignited whatever initial, sort of, attraction I had to her when I was a teenager."

Q: Did you do your own singing in the film?

A: "Yes and my mother is going to be so excited when she sees this. She always wanted me to sing and dance. I had so much fun doing that!"

Q: So doing a musical could be in the cards for you?

A: "I would love to. What's so liberating about singing and dancing is that it turns your head off. You coast on this wave of muscle memory. You literally can't think while you're performing. There's a kind of transcendence to it. I think maybe that's why Marilyn was so especially talented at it. Her singing and dancing are unparalleled and her musical numbers are just breathtaking."

Q: The film used many of the same locations in shooting "Prince and the Showgirl." Did that add to the production?

A: "There was a lot of synchronicity. We shot in the actual Parkside house (that Marilyn lived in). My dressing room at Pinewood was Marilyn's actual dressing room. That was so special. The stage where she shot that song and dance number was the stage where I shot mine. So many of the props in our movie were in the original 'Prince and the Showgirl' movie."

Q: Did it ever feel ghostly?

A: "Well, it's all energy. And it's what you make of it. I like to make things out of nothing! (laughs) I like to spin things out of thin air, so that stuff works for me."

Q: Did you wear wigs for the part, or grow out your hair?

A: "I wore wigs, but I had to keep my hair really bleached underneath because it would show through the wigs. My eyebrows had to be dark and they were reshaped. You go through so many grotesque phases making movies (laughs). I never really feel quite like myself. I just feel like a mutant -- always halfway in between some other person and myself. I don't know what belongs to me and what doesn't!"

Q: After filming ended was it hard to let go of Marilyn?

A: "I think when you work in a way that really gets under your skin, its not an easy break. You make a little extra room for these people that you play and then they leave. You're left with this hollow space. I wish I could play her again."

Q: Does your daughter Matilda come to set?

A: "She comes with me everywhere."

Q: How do you balance getting into character and then going home at the end of the day to be a mom?

A: "What works for me is to have a commute from where we live to where I work. So that in the morning, I leave the house behind and walk clean and fresh into my professional life. And then the same thing on the way home. I find that a 20 or 30 minute commute makes a kind of passageway for me that I need."

Q: You're currently shooting "OZ," playing Glinda. Matilda must love coming to that set.

A: "It's the best thing professionally that's happened to us. It has brought her on board my work in a way that wasn't possible in a movie like 'Marilyn' or 'Blue Valentine.' On those, there was no space for a kid to come visit and be a kid. (With 'Oz') she comes every single day after school because it's like a playground. She says, 'There's only one good witch and it's my mom.' She's very excited about it."

Q: It's interesting that you said the project was the best thing to happen professionally to "us" not "me."

A: "Definitely. Every choice that I make is about how it's going to affect our life -- where it films, how long it is, what else is going on in her year, what's the last job I did, how much time I've had off in between, how much time we had to really deeply connect and how long can we sustain a period of time where I'm working. So when 'Oz' came along, it was very clear to me that it was the right decision for us."

Opinion: Arsenal's van Persie rivals Messi

By JOHN LEICESTER

AP Sports Columnist

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:27 a.m. ET Nov. 24, 2011

PARIS (AP) -Robin van Persie was a better footballer than Lionel Messi in 2011. Or are statistics which suggest that misleading? Either way, this is official: It is plain absurd that the captain of Arsenal isn't a nominee with Messi for FIFA's Golden Ball award.

Seems Van Persie and injustice are bedfellows. Remember his sending off against Messi's Barcelona in the Champions League in March? Van Persie claimed he did not hear Massimo Busacca blow his whistle. Seemed plausible given the din from the 95,000-plus Nou Camp crowd. The Swiss referee didn't want to know and he ordered Van Persie off. Whether Arsenal might have won that match if Van Persie's hearing had been better and if the Dutchman had stayed on the pitch remains one of football's unanswerables.

In fact, "what if?" follows Van Persie around. That the question is posed in relation to Van Persie shows his importance to Arsenal and the London club's ambitions and future.

If the strong, reliable and intelligent scorer of goals had not hurt his knee volleying home his strike in the League Cup final in February, forcing Arsene Wenger to replace him in the second half with wet blanket Nicklas Bendtner, might Arsenal have won the trophy, instead of losing 2-1 to Birmingham?

Possibly.

If Van Persie hadn't torn right ankle ligaments playing for the Netherlands, forcing Wenger to muddle on without him for five months (he even resorted to the bottom-of-a-barrel measure of playing the ill-suited Andrei Arshavin as a central striker), might Arsenal have won the Premier League title in 2010, instead of Chelsea?

Maybe.

If Van Persie picks up another long-term injury now, will Arsenal finish out of the English league's top four places this season and not qualify for Champions League football and its financial riches next season?

Quite likely.

Will Arsenal be sorry if Wenger cannot get Van Persie to commit to a new contract before his current one expires in 2013?

Definitely.

The departure of Cesc Fabregas this summer for guaranteed trophies with his boyhood club, Barcelona, and Samir Nasri's swoon for the petrobillions of Manchester City left Van Persie, a 2010 World Cup runner-up with the Netherlands, as Arsenal's only remaining, verified world-class player. Jack Wilshere and Theo Walcott are still proving themselves.

Arsenal is without a trophy since 2005. Wenger's Catch-22 is that he needs players of Van Persie's caliber to change that, but he also needs trophies, or at least a realistic hope of winning them, to keep and to attract stars.

The reported US$5.7 million Arsenal paid in 2004 for the Netherlands international looks like a bargain now. Healthy, the 28-year-old has proven as reliable as English rain. As Arsenal fans say: "We don't need Batman, we've got Robin." A basic rule shown to be true in 24 Premier League games is that the club doesn't lose when Van Persie scores the first goal.

So far in 2011, he has scored 31 goals in 29 league games. He is only the fifth Premier League player to score 30 in a calendar year. He is the English league's leading scorer this season, putting away 13 of Arsenal's 25 goals as it has awoken from a lumbering start that included a horrific 8-2 mauling at Manchester United in August.

Van Persie's success rate in the league is outstripping even Messi's in La Liga. The world's best player has scored 29 in 31 Spanish games for Barcelona in 2011.

Van Persie's strength, quick feet and polished technique so prized in the Netherlands are often cited as reasons for his goals. But the intelligent way he spots, creates and sprints into gaps in defenses is exceptional, too.

"He is always in the right place at the right moment and he got two goals again tonight from positions that look easy but they are not. He just understands the game so well," Wenger said Wednesday after Van Persie scored both Arsenal goals in a 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund that qualified his team yet again for the Champions League knockout stage.

"We hope we can keep him fit and with us for a long time."

Messi should be player of the year for 2011, just as he was in 2010 and 2009. The FIFA Ballon d'Or winner will be announced Jan. 9. But there's no real suspense. As good as the 22 other nominees are, Barcelona's star is better.

Still, Van Persie should have been on that list, too.

MIT slinks into a cafe, orders a side of photonic chips on silicon

Whiz-kids the world over have been making significant progress on the development of photonic chips -- devices that "use light beams instead of electrons to carry out their computational tasks." But now, MIT has taken the next major leap, filling in "a crucial piece of the puzzle" that just might allow for the creation of photonic chips on the standard silicon material that underlies most of today's electronics. Today, data can travel via light beams shot over through optical fibers, and once it arrives, it's "converted into electronic form, processed through electronic circuits and then converted back to light using a laser." What a waste. If MIT's research bears fruit, the resulting product could nix those extra steps, allowing the light signal to be processed directly. Caroline Ross, the Toyota Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT, calls it a diode for light; to construct it, researchers had to locate a material that was both transparent and magnetic. In other words, a material that only exists in the Chamber of Secrets. Hit the source link for the rest of the tale.
