U.N. team to tour flood-hit North Korea, no word from leader Kim

SEOUL (Reuters) - A United Nations team will visit North Korea from Tuesday to assess damage from recent floods with a view to developing an aid plan, a U.N. official said, although the North's new leadership is yet to make any detailed response to the disaster.

The team will include some U.N. workers already in North Korea, Christopher de Bono, chief of communications for East Asia and the Pacific for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), told Reuters on Monday.

The trip follows a meeting between U.N. and North Korean officials on Monday, at which Pyongyang presented its assessment of the damage, he said without elaborating on the meeting.

"We have agreed to send an inter-agency rapid assessment team to the two most affected counties tomorrow (July 31)," de Bono said in an emailed statement.

North Korea remains one of the most isolated states in the world. That has not changed since new leader Kim Jong-un took power seven months ago, although floods have in the past provided opportunities for contact with the outside world.

"A U.N. response will be devised after the inter-agency mission confirms the damages and gauges the immediate requirements of the affected population," de Bono said.

Initial reports indicated the damage to farming areas and its effect on people was devastating.

North Korea's official media has reported that floods caused by torrential rainfalls from July 25 killed 88 people, left tens of thousands homeless and damaged farmlands.

Apart from a brief statement carried by the official KCNA news agency three days ago, there has been no other word suggesting how the North's new leadership will help the thousands struggling to survive.

South Korea's Unification Ministry said on Monday its neighbor had not requested any aid from international agencies.

"STORMY APPLAUSE"

On Monday, KCNA said in a lengthy article that Kim, believed to be in his 20s, and his new wife had enjoyed a musical performance commemorating the anniversary of the 1953 truce accord that suspended the war with South Korea.

"When the female vocal sextet 'Our Beloved Leader' resounded with the image of tender-hearted Marshal Kim Jong-un taking care of the big family of the country and giving it happiness projected against the backdrop, the audience stood to give stormy applause," it said.

Kim inherited the leadership of one of the world's poorest states when his father, Kim Jong-il, died in December. Since then he has surprised many by showing a more human side to the dour leadership of his father.

There has also been talk from defectors and other observers of the reclusive state that Kim plans to reform the North's broken economy.

But his response to the latest floods in a country already suffering widespread hunger remains unknown.

The floods come after a period of drought and are certain to lift food prices, already rising sharply. According to defectors contacted by Reuters in neighboring South Korea, rice prices have already risen beyond the reach of ordinary households.

"A heavy downpour on the 29th July, coupled with heavy thunderstorms, have worsened the flood situation for DPRK (North Korea)," the United Nations North Korea office reported on its website (http://kp.one.un.org/theme-groups/contingency-planning-and-emergency-response/current-emergencies/).

North Korea has become increasingly prone to flooding because of widespread deforestation.

Defectors said the rice price increase has been aggravated due to hoarding by middlemen hoping to cash in on economic reforms which Kim's government is reported to be planning.

North Korea, which suffered a period of famine in the 1990s, has for years relied on foreign aid to make up for the shortfall in food production.

Even before the latest flooding, a dysfunctional food distribution system, rapid inflation and international sanctions over Pyongyang's weapons programs have created what is thought to be widespread hunger.

Katrina's Honey Themed Baby Shower - A Beautiful Mess

This weekend I hosted a baby shower for my beautiful sister-in-law, Katrina. When we first started planning the shower Katrina asked if we could have the peanut butter and honey cupcakes that Emma made for my wedding shower?(they are pretty amazing). I loved the idea and decided to use the honey theme for her baby shower! Katrina is expecting a daughter in September and we could not be more excited! Here are a few snapshots from her baby shower...?

The invitations were illustrated by my pal Kelli Murray. I'm in love with the little honey details.?

The shower was held at my favorite local restaurant, Aviary Cafe and Creperie. They have the most delicious food ever.?

Here's the cutest story of the day... My six year old nephew was told by my mother-in-law that he was going to stay home for the shower because "baby showers are only for girls". He was a little upset that our niece was invited and he wasn't. He disappeared into the other room and came back with his own hand drawn invitation to the baby shower. It was so cute that he got to come to the shower... and all our hearts melted!?

Katrina had plenty of help opening her gifts... ha!?

The kids loved filling their bags with candy. I'm pretty sure this was their favorite part...?

The grownups took home honey favors. I made mason jars with vintage textile details on the lids and honey bears with feather bees.?

It was a very fun sunday afternoon. I love Katrina so much. I will never forget at my bachelorette party she told me about her baby fever and then the day we found out the good news! It's so special to see our family growing and it was wonderful to celebrate together.?XO. elsie?

KABUL, Afghanistan - All six troops killed in a weekend roadside bombing in eastern Afghanistan were Americans, NATO confirmed Monday.

German Brig. Gen. Gunter Katz, a spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition, disclosed their nationalities at a briefing, but said he could not provide other details about the incident because it was still under investigation. He said a seventh NATO service member killed Sunday in a separate insurgent attack in the south also was an American.

The Taliban on Monday claimed responsibility for the deaths of the six U.S. troops ? the latest caused by bombs planted by insurgents along roads, paths or mountain tracks.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in a statement the blast struck the U.S. troops in their armored vehicle around 8 p.m. Sunday in Wardak province, just south of Kabul.

Coalition and Afghan forces are trying to secure areas of Wardak that insurgents use as gateway into the Afghan capital where they stage high-profile attacks on Afghan government and NATO targets.

Wardak provincial police chief Gen. Abdul Qayum Baqizoi said that after the explosion in Jalrez district, a coalition airstrike killed a local Taliban commander and wounded three insurgents.

Also in the east, authorities said gunmen assassinated a chief prosecutor in Ghazni province Monday morning as he drove to work. Mohammad Ali Ahmadi, the deputy provincial governor, said Sahar Gul was shot twice ? once in the head and once in the chest.

The Taliban routinely target Afghan government officials to weaken support for President Hamid Karzai's administration.

In the south, three suicide bombers riding in a three-wheeled vehicle blew themselves up Monday afternoon in Kandahar city, killing two children and wounding six other civilians, said Kandahar provincial spokesman Ahmad Jawed Faisal. He said authorities had not determined the target of the explosion.

A surge in Afghan and coalition forces during the past two years has routed Taliban fighters from many of their strongholds in the south, but the insurgents have stepped up their attacks this summer to take back key areas.

Separately, President Hamid Karzai on Monday condemned the public killing of a married Afghan woman who was accused of allegedly running off with another man.

In a statement, Karzai called the execution-style slaying an unforgiveable crime. A video of the killing, which surfaced recently, showed the woman being shot multiple times as people stood nearby cheering.

Before it collapsed in 2001, the hardline Taliban regime carried out public executions of women, mostly for adultery.

Police in Shinwari district of Parwan province say the Taliban were behind the woman's slaying, which occurred about up to 12 days ago.

Karzai's condemnation comes as donor nations met in Tokyo to pledge $16 billion in aid for Afghanistan. The donors expressed strong concerns over how the money will be handled and also called on Kabul to improve human rights, especially women's rights.

"Such a crime is unforgivable in the sacred religion of Islam and the laws of the country," Karzai said.

The U.S. Embassy in Kabul and the top commander of U.S. and NATO forces on Sunday also condemned the killing of the woman.
