MANAGING LOW BACK PAIN

Do you suffer from low back pain? If you do, you are not alone. Millions of people develop low back pain at some time during their lives. The tightness, aches and pain may be due to lifting the wrong way, making sudden moves or taking a fall. Maintaining poor posture, carrying extra weight, being out of shape and living a stressful life are some causes of low back pain. While certain steps may be taken to avoid back pain through a variety of common sense approaches to daily living, medical attention for back pain is necessary, especially for the following:

1. Constant pain, tingling, numbness, or extreme weakness in your leg
2. Difficulty controlling your bowel or bladder
3. Numbness in the groin or rectal area
4. Fever and chills

RECOGNIZE RISK FACTORS WHICH MAY LAED TO LOW BACK PAIN. THEY ARE:
General ? General risk factors include age, physical fitness, obesity, and smoking. Incidences of low back pain increase with age, excess body weight, poor physical condition and during pregnancy.

Postural/Structural ? Postural or structural abnormalities are associated with a high incidence of low back pain. These abnormalities can be identified by a physical examination and testing by a health care provider.

Occupational ? The requirement for lifting in a twisted position is the strongest risk factor for future low back pain. Other occupational risk factors include constant twisting, bending, stooping, lifting extremely heavy objects, sitting, standing, and working on poor surfaces.

Environmental ? Cigarette smoking is associated with low back pain. In fact, smokers have twice as much pain as non smokers.

Psychosocial ? Stress, anxiety and depression are associated with an increased incidence of low back pain.

Recreational ? Although regular exercise is generally recommended as a preventive measure by many health care providers for low back pain, certain high-impact activities such as running, high/low impact, and basketball may aggravate back problems; certain sports, such as gymnastics and golf, also may increase the risk of back pain.

BACK PAIN RELIEF
Relieving back pain may be your first concern. According to many health care providers using ice, over-the-counter medications and heat are remedies you can do at home. It is also important that you keep moving. Prolonged bed rest or sitting will actually aggravate your pain, while walking or stretching frequently help lessen the pain. However, it is advisable to check with your physician first.

1. Non-prescription medications such as aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen and naproxen can help reduce pain. It is best to check with your doctor to make sure you are taking the best medication for you.
2. Ice is great for decreasing pain. Apply an ice pack at the point of pain (Don?t apply ice without an outer protective covering. If ice is not available, a bag of frozen vegetables will work). Apply for approximately 20 minutes each hour. Ice can be applied on this intermittent basis over a 24?48 hour period for immediate pain relief.
3. If discomfort still remains after icing for two days then try heat. A heating pad or hot water bottle wrapped in a towel and applied to the sore area for approximately 15 minutes each hour can relax the affected muscles.
4. Relaxing in a warm tub or shower may also help to lessen low back pain by relaxing tense muscles. Also, stretching and massage therapy can help relieve muscle tension.
5. Maintaining good posture can help relieve discomfort. Stand tall and avoid excessive curve to low back and pelvis while maintaining a neutral spine.
6. Relax! Focus on dealing with stress and your back pain often disappears.

TO HELP AVOID LOW BACK PAIN, TRY FOLLOWING THESE HELPFUL TIPS.

Use back rests and lumbar supports when sitting; avoid sitting in a ?C? curve with a rounded, slumped spine; try to maintain your spine in neutral.

Make sure seats offer optimal seating comfort and support whether you are at the office, home or in a car.

Quit smoking, but wait until your pain has decreased for better success.

Maintain your weight by eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly.

Reduce stress and anxiety.

Change your position regularly. For example, if you find yourself sitting for long periods of time, try to switch between sitting and standing.

Adjust table and work station to comfortable heights.

Avoid activities that are clearly associated with previous episodes of pain.

When lifting, always keep loads close to your body, face the load and use proper lifting techniques. Always perform a one-handed lift, keeping the other hand on your thigh for support, for lighter loads. For heavier loads, a two-handed lift will be necessary; perform a proper weightroom-style squat, keeping the spine in neutral and abdominals engaged throughout the lift.

Allow for adequate warm-up and cool-down before and after exercise.

Always wear protective footwear and avoid exercising for prolonged periods of time on hard surfaces.

Strengthen your abdominal and back muscles to help maintain good posture.

Stretch your muscles frequently to keep them relaxed and flexible (focus on upper and lower back; front and back of thighs).

GOOD BODY MECHANICS

1. Lifting ? When performing a two-handed lift, face and get close to your object. Stand with feet shoulder width apart bending at the hips and knees, tightening your abdominals and keeping a slight arch in your back. Take a deep breath and exhale as you lift with the muscles in your legs and buttocks. Stand tall and carry object close to your body.
2. Getting in and out of bed ? When getting out of bed, roll over to your side. Using your arms, push your body up to a sitting position with your legs lowering toward the ground. Use your arms and legs to bring you to a standing position. Reverse the steps to get into bed.
3. Getting in and out of a car ? When getting into a car, stand with your back turned toward the side of the seat. Using your arms and legs, lower yourself into the side of the seat then gently scoot into the center of the seat. Sitting sideways in the seat, keeping your back straight and moving as an entire unit, pivot your body around until you are sitting erect and in front of the steering wheel by bringing one leg in at a time and grasping onto the steering wheel.
4. Sitting ? Sit in a chair that provides lumbar support. If not available, utilize a rolled towel or small pillow. Sit with your knees level or slightly lower than your hips with feet flat on the floor. Maintain good posture from your head to your toes keeping your ears, shoulders and hips in line with each other.
5. Prolonged Standing ? When standing for long periods of time it may be helpful to elevate one foot off the ground and rest it on a step stool to help relieve stress to the low back.

?Beliefs that can sabotage your life.? How?s that for a title? Heidi Grant Halvorson, Ph.D., author of? Succeed: How We Can Reach Our Goals, recently wrote about several psychology studies that found roughly half of us subscribe to the belief that our abilities are fixed.?That means, we don?t really believe we can succeed. We assume we?re right about our judgments of our ability to learn new skills or improve at ?using technology,? being creative or running a business.

Halvorson gave this great example:

Years ago I dated an avid pool player, who convinced me one night at our neighborhood bar to give the game another chance.? Before beginning, he gave me a brief lesson ? how to hold the cue, how to line up a shot, etc.? We played, and something totally unexpected happened ? I played well.? In fact, I came awfully close to beating him. ?And I remember feeling both elated that I had improved, and completely freaked out.? Did I really improve? ?How was that possible?? I?m not good at this sort of thing.? Maybe it was a fluke.

A few days later we played again, and I approached the table with a nervousness I hadn?t felt before.? What would happen?? I had no idea.? And that nervousness wreaked havoc on my ability to play ? I couldn?t sink a ball to save my life.? I knew it was a fluke, I thought.? ?I?m definitely not good at this sort of thing.

Granted, we?re talking about playing pool here, and I realize that it?s not a skill that usually has life-altering consequences.? But what if it was?? What if instead of writing off my pool-playing ability, I had written off my ability to do learn new skills, use computers, write well, be creative, find love, have willpower, or make friends?? What if I believed that I couldn?t improve when it came to something that really mattered?

The issue here is that if you don?t believe you can succeed, no amount of career development or self improvement is going to last because fundamentally you don?t believe you can improve. Halverson says, ?Believing that your ability is fixed is a self-fulfilling prophecy, and the self-doubt it creates will sabotage you in the end.?

This leads back to questioning your beliefs. Are they judgments? Are they base on reality? Why couldn?t you learn, practice and get better at what you want?? You?ll love this. Halverson writes, ?Change really is always possible, and the science here is crystal-clear ? there is no ability that can?t be developed with experience.?

So, go for it. Strategize and signal your mind to raise a big, red flag when you think you can?t improve or succeed.

The so-called cookiejacking attack involves figuring out the victim's Windows username, knowing which version of Windows the victim is running and tricking the user into selecting the entire content of the stolen cookie.

Italian security researcher Rosario Valotta has discovered a new way for hackers to steal their victims' online credentials -- stealing the session cookies from whatever site a victim is visiting.

The stolen cookies can then be used to get victims' computers to download malware, forge clicks or send messages, according to Valotta's website.

The attack, which Valotta dubbed "cookiejacking," works on all versions of Internet Explorer across all versions of the Windows operating system, the researcher contends.

"Microsoft is working to address the issue in an upcoming update," Jerry Bryant, a group manager at Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Trustworthy Computing, told TechNewsWorld.

Apparently, there is no real reason for haste because this is a "moderate flaw," Oliver Lavery, director of security R&D at nCircle, told TechNewsWorld.

"Substantial user interaction is involved, reducing the likelihood of successful exploitation," Lavery stated.

"Many times a year we see vulnerabilities that allow malicious websites to execute code on a victim's computer with minimal interaction," Lavery explained. "This cookiejacking proof-of-concept is nowhere near that level of risk."

Reaching Into the Cookie Jar

The cookiejacking attack involves figuring out the victim's Windows username, knowing which version of Windows the victim is running and tricking the user into selecting the entire content of the stolen cookie.

Cookies are text files, so selecting their entire content is the same as selecting the entire content of a word or other text file -- you click the mouse button and drag the mouse down the length of the file.

How Cookiejacking Works

Cookiejacking violates IE's cross-zone interaction policy, leveraging a zero-day vulnerability affecting every version of IE on every version of Windows, Valotta said.

IE uses proprietary mechanisms called "Security Zones" that let users group websites according to the level of trust their sources have and prevent content from the different zones from interacting.

That's why when you use a wireless connection, your security software will ask you whether you want the site you're accessing to be kept in the Internet zone or allowed to access files on your computer.

However, hackers can create an IFrame element in a Web page that contains the contents of a file from a user's hard disk, which violates Internet Explorer's Cross Zone interaction policy, nCircle's Lavery pointed out.

Inline Frames, or IFrames, are essentially windows cut into your Web page that let visitors view another page on or off your website without having to reload the entire page.

You can use links in one IFrame to change links in another

"The problem is with Internet Explorer allowing a specific file (the cookies file) to be loaded into an IFrame in a page," Amit Klein, chief technology officer at Trusteer, told TechNewsWorld. "In theory no such file should be loaded into an IFrame."

Valotta on Cookiejacking

In order to steal a victim's cookies, the cookiejacker has to first figure out the victim's Windows username, because the cookies file system path depends on that username. Forcing the victim's browser to retrieve a resource will make it send the username in plain text, Valotta wrote.

The attacker also needs to find out which version of Windows the victim is running because different versions store the cookies in different folders. Parsing the "navigator.userAgent" object will yield the information, Valotta said.

Next, the cookiejacker has to get the victim to drag and drop the cookie. Valotta's solution was to create a jigsaw puzzle that purportedly would reveal a picture of a naked woman when it was solved. He put this on Facebook as a test case and got 80 responses.

In order to get the victim to select the entire content of the cookie, he displayed cookies in two nested IFrames. The first is short and scrollable and the second contains the cookie. When the victim clicks on the cookie, the first IFrame begins to scroll.

That scrolling occurs while the user is clicking the mouse button down, in effect getting the user to select the entire content of the cookie with one click.

Although Valotta contends the attack is easier to launch successfully than it sounds, Trusteer's Klein was skeptical.

"The tricky part is to convince people to click on and drag items across a page," Klein stated. "I'm not sure whether this is as straightforward in real-life scenarios as it's portrayed. That includes, for example, the need to find the victim's Windows username."

Further, Klein pointed out, Valotta has stated that the method may not work across proxies.

The Risks and Danger of Cookiejacking

The amount of user interaction makes it less likely that an attacker will be reliably successful in exploiting this vulnerability, Microsoft's Bryant said.

However, Microsoft is not downplaying the issue and "will take action against any attempts to target it," Bryant warned.

That brimstone-and-hellfire approach may be necessary.

"You never know whether a more sophisticated, less user-interactive-based attack may be developed, perhaps in combination with other vulnerabilities, to exploit this," Trusteer's Klein warned.

"Saying that this vulnerability is not high-risk doesn't mean it's irrelevant or no-risk," nCircle's Lavery pointed out.

"It's not a severe enough issue to warrant an emergency out-of-band patch release, and I'm confident Microsoft will release a patch for it at some point in the future," he added.

Chinese, International Producers Beat Path to Co-Productions

BEIJING -- Producers and movie industry advocates visiting the Beijing International Film Festival?s first full day on Sunday from around the world joined their Chinese counterparts in a summit to slice and dice the potential perks and pitfalls of making movies together.

Co-productions can save foreign producers money and increase their chances of distribution in China?s tightly controlled but booming market, where gross ticket sales rose 64% to $1.5 billion in 2010 despite a 20-title cap on the Hollywood films that out-gross locals films two-to-one.

And Chinese companies stand to benefit from co-productions, too, at a time when the central government is encouraging local producers to hone their skills by working with foreign experts -- thus helping to boost China?s soft power around the world.

Zhou Tiedong, president of the summit-organizing China Film Promotion International, said 48 of the 49 Chinese films that had some recent export success, were made with foreign participation: ?This shows the promising future of co-productions,? Zhou said.

Mike Ellis, the Hollywood studios? lead lobbyist in Asia at the Motion Picture Association of America said that despite the desire to work together and the great potential gain, the level of uncertainty in China?s business climate was ?really difficult for visiting producers? working for publicly traded companies that must answer to investors.

?China must look at easing the process of script approval,? said Ellis, who?s been working for the MPAA in Asia for 13 years and has seen projects get stuck in red tape at the Film Bureau. ?Scripts are approved and then they?re not approved,? he said, referring to moving goalposts often set by the State Administration of Radio Film and Television.

Director Gao Qunshu said that most co-productions thus far had succeeded in only one of the home markets involved. Even Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, a big hit in the U.S. in 2001, saw mediocre returns in China.

Gao said the problem lay partly in impatience among inexperienced investors demanding films be made quickly. ?Chinese investors don?t have any idea how to make a film,? Gao said. ?They?re shortsighted. Chinese blockbusters tend to be dark, because critics don?t take lighthearted stories seriously. But China has had a hard time finding new ways of telling stories.?

Yu Dong, CEO of the Nasdaq-listed Bona Film Group, whose 15 films last year commanded a 10 percent share of the Chinese marketplace, sounded as if he agreed: ?We?ve have good box office for romantic comedies, but of our 500 films each year, there are still a limited number of stories. This is a problem under the current censorships and we must seek a new breakthrough. We cannot make 500 films based only on kung fu and comedy. Real flourishing will depend on the change in the kinds of stories we can tell.?

Corky Kessler, a lawyer for independent filmmakers visiting Beijing for the first time, said he would encourage his clients, many of whom use incentives offered by 37 U.S. states and the federal government to consider spending some of the money they save in the U.S. on making their movies in China.

Asked about the biggest challenge she faces in working in China -- where some subjects are politically fraught and deemed inappropriately challenging to one-party rule -- producer Janet Yang, whose last film here, Disney?s China High School Musical, was a disappointment, remains upbeat.

?Things are pleasant and easy here. While SAG actors are asking for private dressing rooms, Chinese actors like to hang out with each other,? said Yang, who?s been coming to China to work on films since the early 1980s.? ?In some ways it?s easier to shoot here. People here tend to be friends with one another. There?s not as much back-biting here and sense that everyone?s trying to make things better for each other. We know what the hot button issues are, such as a movie about Tibet, then we avoid them, but then the space you can work within is actually very large.?

Consequence Says He's 'Not A Part Of G.O.O.D. Music'

All good things must come to an end, and Wednesday during "RapFix Live," Consequence announced that he and his "former friend" Kanye West have severed business ties, and he is moving on to start his own record company.

"My purpose for coming here is clarification. There are many fans who still align me with G.O.O.D. Music and it's not fair to their intellect that they are fooled in that manner," Consequence told MTV News' Sway. "I'm not a part of G.O.O.D. Music, I'm the CEO of Band Camp Records. Any piece of intellectual property or artist you hear come my way is via Band Camp Records."

Cons, who appeared as a guest on Kanye's debut album, The College Dropout, and its 2005 follow-up, Late Registration, also confirmed that he has written songs with Kanye in the past. For example, Consequence (real name Dexter Mills) was credited as a writer on Kanye's 2008 track "Paranoid," though he didn't sing on the track. According to Consequence, however, there were times he didn't get his just due. "One record that I never got credit for, which always stuck out in my mind, was that I helped out with some of the rhymes from 'Champion,' " Cons said of the 2007 song that appeared on Kanye's Graduation.

Quence grew increasingly frustrated when his sophomore album, Cons TV, was pushed to the backburner. According to him, that's when his and Kanye's relationship began to strain. Now the oft-delayed album will be renamed Get Even.

Consequence is also getting set to release his Movies on Demand 3 mixtape and branding his independent Band Camp record label. As of now, the Band Camp roster includes himself and up-and-coming singer Tannie J, as well as producers Lee Bannon and Produce Section.

Desperate Housewives Star Arrested For DUI

Tsk, tsk! Poor choices!

Desperate Housewives star, Ricardo Chavira, who plays Eva Longoria's husband, was arrested early this morning in Los Angeles on a DUI charge.

Ricardo was pulled over by police for a a routine traffic stop at around 2 AM, but when the officers approached his car, they could smell alcohol on his breath. Ricardo was asked to step out of the vehicle and complete a few field sobriety tests. He failed them all.

When Ricardo refused to take a blood or breath test, the cops arrested him on suspicion of DUI and booked him at a nearby jail. He's currently being held on $25,000 bail.

Seriously, does Marc Cherry not pay you enough to call a cab? C'mon!

Sleek Audio And 50 Cent Break Up, Kill Wireless Headphone Dreams

Earlier in the year, 50 Cent and Sleek Audio decided to partner on a set of wireless over-the-head headphones, and while the company had traditionally stuck to earbuds, this seemed like a great opportunity to brand out. After all, Beats by Dre are as popular as ever, so why not try to steal a piece of that market? Evidently the plan hasn't worked out so well. The company today announced that they were killing all hopes of collaborating with 50 Cent on these headphones, and in fact, the enter licensing agreement between G-Unit and Sleek Audio has been "terminated."

It's interesting that the two seemed so thrilled to be working together just a few months ago, and now the whole thing is off. Mark Krywko, CEO of Sleek Audio, had this to say: "We will be re-evaluating our Wireless Hybrid over-the-ear headphones at a later date. Currently we are working to bring our new, U.S.-made in-ear products to the market."

That sounds to us that it may not have been as easy to nail these as previously assumed, or perhaps 50 Cent just didn't feel comfortable with the arrangement. Either way, the deal's off for now, so we hope you're okay settling for a set of Beats instead.

10 tips for motivating your employees

1. You can not really motivate your employees. What ??!?? I know this first tip seems a little "counter-productive, but be patient with me. You see, the motivation is internal not external. You can motivate people with the carrot and the stick for a while, but can not last. In the long run, people need to motivate themselves. You are not helpless, but because the motivation comes from inspiration. Then present your goals and inspiring people will take over the task motivatingthemselves.

2. Create a motivating environment. How do you feel your business? People on the ground running on Monday morning and live for the weekend. Your work environment has to have a greater impact on productivity than you might think. The fact is that every company has a culture. But most have come about by chance, and that is too risky a way to grow your business. Everything from your office equipment for the planning sessionEffect of the environment, the impact of any movement that inform you of your culture and you can see rising rate your productivity.

3. Involve employees in decisions that affect them. Your employees do not just want a job, be part of something more. So leave. This is a win-win scenario for all. Crochet Vandals Do Graffiti ... Like Your Grandma

Some of the world's biggest street artists gathered in Los Angeles in April for the opening of the Art In The Streets show at the Museum of Contemporary Arts. Mingling in the crowd might have been street art legends such as Shepard Fairey or even the ever-mysterious Banksy.

But not "Captain Hook." She's part of an international movement of so-called yarn bombers taking an old-school approach to street art. Unlike most street artists who travel with spray paint or markers, Captain Hook ? as she asked NPR to call her ? works with a crochet hook and yarn.

Her "walls" are public fixtures, like the bronze bear statue in L.A.'s Griffith Park that stands zombie-like with its paws out. "This is crochet on a statue," she says, sitting in her Los Angeles apartment, a pile of granny squares in her lap. "This could be happening in 1725."

In mid-March, Hook was feverishly working on the bear's 10th outfit ? its St. Patrick's Day attire ? a body glove in four shades of green. "I can't make the same thing over and over, so I made a vest, then some shorts, then some lederhosen," she says. "And now ... I think I'm going for the full body."

It's an ambitious project, but Hook has confidence. Raised on a commune in the 1970s, Hook was part of an all-girl needlepoint workforce. "You always had to be making something," she says. "So in the houses I grew up in there were blankets, embroidered dresses and pillows ... covered in needlepoint. I mean, we rocked it. We were good."

Hook, also a writer and actress, estimated it would take 20 hours to finish the outfit and anticipated having plenty of time waiting around on movie sets. But on the afternoon of the "installation," she finds herself frantically crocheting.

"I've been hysterical basically," she says. "I've been up since 6 a.m." Without any time to spare, the project changes scope ? Hook alters her original crocheted body glove pattern into a more manageable bear-sized hoodie.

"Now, it's a shrug with a hood," she says. "It's sleeves, a back and a hood."

When the time to vandalize the bear finally arrives, Captain Hook's accomplice, expert seamstress "Vanessa XKiller," meets her at the statue at 5 p.m. The duo has chosen to do the installation in broad daylight to maximize the potential for human interaction.

But in the half-hour they struggle to assemble the bear's green hood, none of the people exercising, lounging in the grass or walking their dogs seem to notice.

"I don't know why, but this one doesn't satisfy me like the others have," Hook says.

"It seems kind of gangster cute," adds Vanessa.

Despite her disappointment, Captain Hook wakes up the next morning eager to do a drive-by. But according to a text message from Vanessa, someone has already taken down the handmade shrug. Perhaps the park's maintenance crew has finally had it with Hook's work.

As it turns out, though, Marshal Barrena, the park's senior gardener and the man ultimately responsible for the bear, is a fan. "It puts a little spring in your step, seeing something like that in the morning," Barrena says.

In a county of 10 million people, if Captain Hook has succeeded in making one gardener and a few passersby stop and laugh, she feels she's achieved her goal. And she's already plotting her next move.

"There's a bust of Valentino that I think would look really great with a scarf," she says.

In Los Angeles, it seems, there's always something else out there, just begging for a pair of crocheted lederhosen. "I saw a dolphin statue in Santa Monica that stands much like the bear, fins out," she says. "When I saw that, I was like, 'Dude, your days are numbered!' "

Syrian Expatriates Discuss Recent Violence

As the tanks roll into to the suburbs of Damascus and opposition activists release reports of more deaths at the hands of President Bashar Assad's regime, Syrians in neighboring countries say their families back home are beginning to turn against Assad.

And we turn now to NPR's Kelly McEvers. She's monitoring the news out of Syria from neighboring Lebanon. And she has the stories of two Syrian living in Beirut. Both insist the more violence is used against civilians in Syria, the less people will support the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

KELLY MCEVERS: Ahmed is 30 years old. He studies political science here in Beirut. Ahmed isn't his real name. He comes from a large and prominent Sunni family living mostly in Damascus and Syria's second city, Aleppo. That family once opposed the ruling party, was exiled from Syria and then went back. The deal was, conduct your business but don't get involved in politics.

This is how Ahmed describes his family today.

AHMED (Student, Political Science): And we still have land. We are landowners. So we are better off than other Syrians. We're quiet.

MCEVERS: So quiet that when Ahmed started posting news of the protests and crackdowns to his Twitter feed and Facebook page, his relatives were angry.

AHMED: You're getting us in trouble. We don't want any part of this, so please quit your activities.

MCEVERS: Ahmed didn't want to quit so he just changed his name online. Then, as the violence against protesters increased, the family started coming around. First it was the young cousins who began to question Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

AHMED: They have gone into the point where they don't believe that Bashar can deliver on the reforms. They are not quite saying, okay, guys, we got to do something. They're just saying that, okay, you got to (unintelligible). You got to know what's going on.

MCEVERS: And slowly the older generation joined in, too.

AHMED: They are not very computer friendly, so you won't expect much from them. They haven't turned to activism yet. They won't go to the protests.

MCEVERS: But they have stopped watching state TV and they're now watching Al-Jazeera, which is usually more favorable to protesters.

Then, on Monday, Syrian tanks rolled into the town of Daraa, killing at least 20 people. That's when Ahmed's mother, who's in her late 60's, snapped.

AHMED: She came out and she said, okay, Bashar is not a reformer. He is a brutal murderer. I can't support him anymore.

MCEVERS: Ahmed still not sure what his mother and her generation are going to do with this anger.

Mohammed is 22 years old. He's also a student here in Beirut. He's from a middle class Sunni family in Damascus. Mohamed is not his real name either.

He says the debates between pro-Assad Syrians and anti-Assad Syrians here in Beirut are getting heated, and this makes him nervous. He says Syria is a country where the regime holds a lot of competing factions together.

MOHAMMAD (Student): I think it's a critical point for Syria now. If the regime fell down, I don't think it's to the benefit of anyone. There are millions and millions of sects and many families, big families, who want their country to be there.

MCEVERS: If the regime falls, he says, these groups will start fighting for what they want. Mohammed says he's not willing to protest right now. Like many Syrians, he says he prefers stability to freedom. But he says the more the regime uses violence, like in Daraa, the less stability there will be and the less likely it is that the regime will maintain mass support.

MOHAMMAD: I know for sure that there are some people in Syria, once blood is spilled it will never be stopped. I know that for sure. I know. You know their revenge thing, you know, it's in their blood, that something, the family stuff.

MCEVERS: He says is the violence reaches Damascus, which so far has remained quiet, amid a major deployment of security forces, then the masses can strike back.

MOHAMMAD: Violence will lead you to a point where you can't handle it anymore. They're very do with the violence and go with the violence, go with the flow. And I would go with the flow 'cause I'm not going to be sitting at home while tanks are going under my home, you know.

MCEVERS: The question now is whether the crackdown will go that far, whether it will bring a majority of people into the streets like they did in Egypt.

Mohammad and Ahmed say this coming Friday will be another definitive day. Definitive in which direction, they do not know.
