TSX rises, but U.S. storm weighs on volumes

TORONTO (Reuters) - Toronto's main stock index rose on Tuesday, led higher by financial and energy stocks on light volumes, as investors tried to assess the impact of super storm Sandy on the United States.

Sandy, one of the biggest storms to ever hit the country, left at least 15 people dead and caused significant power disruptions, though some market players had expected even more devastation.

The Canadian market felt the effect of the closure of U.S. stock markets for the second straight day, with trading volumes well below average.

"The disruption caused by the storm with the closure of the financial markets in the United States is having the major effect," said Gavin Graham, president of Graham Investment Strategy.

"Given how lackluster the trading is, how low the volumes are, people are very reluctant to take positions," he said.

Volume on the Toronto Stock Exchange was light at about 16 million shares, just over half of Friday's 30 million shares traded around the same time.

Some energy stocks were among the biggest gainers.

Suncor Energy Inc was up 1.51 percent at C$33.60, while Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. rose 2 percent at C$30.38, playing the biggest role of any two companies in leading the market higher.

The energy sub group, one of the biggest on the index, was up 0.64 percent even though Brent crude prices fell.

"It's a reminder that stuff happens, whether it is an act of God like Hurricane Sandy or Katrina, or alternatively political uncertainty like the Iranian situation in the Persian Gulf," Graham said.

Financials, up 0.44 percent, played the biggest role of any sector in lifting the market, led by Royal Bank of Canada , up 0.75 percent to C$56.77.

Materials stocks were up 0.63 percent, helped by gains in gold companies. Barrick Gold rose 1 percent to C$39.99.

At midmorning, the Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> was up 69.19 points, or 0.56 percent, at 12,381.94. All the ten main groups within the index were positive. (Additional reporting By Claire Sibonney; Editing by Jeffrey Hodgson)

Q&A: Could Sandy postpone the election?

One week before a close election, superstorm Sandy has confounded the presidential race, halting early voting in many areas, forcing both candidates to suspend campaigning and leading many to ponder whether the election might be postponed. It could take days to restore electricity to all of the more than 8 million homes and businesses that lost power when the storm pummeled the East Coast. (AP) ? One week before a close election, superstorm Sandy has confounded the presidential race, halted early voting in many areas and led some to ponder whether the election might even be postponed.

It could take days to restore electricity to more than 8 million homes and businesses that lost power when the storm pummeled the East Coast. That means it's possible power could still be out in parts of some states on Election Day next Tuesday ? a major problem for precincts that rely on electronic voting machines.

But as the storm breached the coast, even some of those intimately involved in the election seemed in the dark about what options are available to cope with the storm. Asked Monday whether President Barack Obama had the power to reschedule the election, White House press secretary Jay Carney said he wasn't sure.

Some questions and answers about what's possible and not when it comes to reworking Election Day.

Q. Could the Nov. 6 election be changed?

A. Yes, but it's highly unlikely, and it's not up to the president. Congress sets the date for the presidential election ? the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, every fourth year. Congress could act within the next week to change the date, but that would be tough because lawmakers are on recess and back home in their districts campaigning for re-election. Plus, it's likely that would mean changing the date for the entire country, not just those affected by the storm. What's more, Congress only selects the date for federal races, so changing the date would wreak havoc for state and local elections also scheduled for Nov. 6. States might have to hold two separate days of voting, which could bust state budgets.

Q. What about pushing back the election just in some states?

A. It's possible, but the legal issues get tricky. States, by and large, are in charge of their own elections. Each state has its own laws dealing with what to do if an emergency jeopardizes voting and who can make the call. Federal law says that if a state fails to conduct an election for federal races on the day Congress chooses, the state legislature can pick a later date. But state and federal laws don't always jive perfectly. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has said his state's laws don't grant him authority to reschedule the presidential election.

Q. Have elections ever been postponed before?

A. Yes, but not on the presidential level. New York City was holding its mayoral primary when terrorists struck on Sept. 11, 2001, and the city rescheduled the election. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Louisiana's governor postponed municipal elections in New Orleans after elections officials said polling places wouldn't be ready.

Q. Other than rescheduling the election, can anything else be done?

A. Voting hours could be extended at various locations. In places where electronic voting machines are in use, paper ballots could be used instead. Some areas also might choose to move polling locations if existing ones are damaged, inaccessible or won't have power on Election Day.

Q. Would those options create any other problems?

A. Lots. If poll hours are extended, under a 2002 law passed by Congress in response to the disputed 2000 presidential election, any voters who show up outside of regular hours must use provisional ballots, which are counted later and could be challenged. Sandy's impact was felt in some of the most competitive states in the presidential race, including Virginia and Ohio. The more provisional ballots that are cast, the greater the chances are that the winner won't be known until days or even weeks after the election.

There's another issue if poll hours are extended in some areas ? such as counties with the worst storm damage ? and not in others. That could prompt lawsuits under the Constitution's Equal Protection Clause, said Edward Foley, an election law expert at The Ohio State University.

Relocating polling places is also risky because it could drive down turnout, said Neil Malhotra, a political economist at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. "If you disrupt their routine and the polling place they've always been going to, even if you don't move it very far, they vote less," he said.

Q. What is the federal government doing to help?

A. The Federal Emergency Management Agency's administrator, Craig Fugate, said Monday he anticipated the storm's impact could linger into next week and affect the election. He said FEMA would look at what support it could provide to states before the election. "This will be led by the states," he said.

Nexus 4 to arrive November 13 - News - Know Your Cell

Google officially announced its flagship Nexus 4 smartphone on Monday. The 4.7-inch Android handset features a super-speedy Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, but it's lacking in one major department. Brace yourselves, folks, as the Nexus 4 will not be sporting the LTE-capabilities we've been spoiled by in rival handsets.

That aside (yes, it's a big one, but let's focus on the good stuff for a minute), the Nexus 4 stacks up quite well against its competitors -- most especially in its sleek design, with an etched glass backing. As for the guts, you get 2GB of RAM and two different storage options: 8GB for $299 or 16GB for $349. Additionally, T-Mobile will offer an unlocked model for $199 with a two-year service agreement.?

Google's Nexus 4 also packs an 8-megapixel camera, along with a front-facing 1.3 megapixel. And while we're on the topic, you'll also be able to snap better (well, bigger, at least) shots with Photo Sphere. The program lets you capture 360-degree images by shooting in every possible direction. And if you're into sharing, you can add your pics directly to Google Maps.?

As for the 2100 mAh battery, it promises roughly 10 hours of talk time. Oh, and Nexus 4 runs on a brand new flavor of Android's latest Jelly Bean OS (Android 4.2). The new smartphone is also pimping Google's new wireless charging system, which lets you power up by simply setting your phone down on a charging surface.

5 Ways to Improve Networking at Events - Better Business Blog

?

?

Conferences, meet-ups, business networking events ? They can all be lots of fun. Time off from the office, great food, interesting discussions and lots of booze, but we cannot forget what is really important about these events ? Networking.

In order to be successful in business you need to be your own marketing agent and the best representative of your company. Socializing, talking about you and your company, building relationships is all part of marketing yourself and your business. Conferences and networking events provide the opportunity to get away from the work environment meet like-minded professionals in a casual atmosphere.

But why is it so important?

It is estimated that anywhere from 50-80% of business is generated from networking and word of mouth. This is quite a significant statistic.

Here are 5 easy ways to increase the effectiveness of your networking:

1. Be Genuine

While you should always prepare and practice answers to expected questions like ?So what do you do?? you have to make sure they aren't clich? and fake. On the other end of the spectrum, you want to make sure that your answers don't sound pretentious ? this is a huge turn off. Your goal is for every person you talk to, regardless of their industry, to understand and connect with what you?re saying.

2. Ask Open-Ended Questions

When doing sales, this is one of the first things you learn. In order to get the person talking, ask questions that cannot be answered by a simple yes or no; let the other person open up and talk about themselves ? who doesn't like talking about themselves?

As a general rule of thumb, ?why? questions generate the most interesting answers and conversations.

3. Don?t Appear Desperate

Just as in dating, neediness is an incredible turn off when it comes to networking. ?So no matter how badly you need this partnership or strategic client, you?ve got to set that aside when interacting with others.

4. Don't Be Selfish

All too often, entrepreneurs, sales people and job seekers go into a networking event thinking it?s their one shot to get X, Y or Z. By setting the stakes so high, you suck all the fun out of the event and put an inordinate amount of pressure on your shoulders.

Remember that you are there to add to the event, help others or just learn what other people are doing in their fields. This slight adjustment in thinking will increase your sense of purpose and pride. Before you know it, you?ll find yourself having a good time, developing strong relationships and attracting loads of referrals.

5. Meeting the Right People

While all of these tips are well and good, the question remains, in the sea of faceless walking networking opportunities, how do you find the right ones in the short amount of time you have?

Networking at an event is no easy task. These types of events can number from 200 to 2,000 people, how are you supposed to find the right connections in the short period of time you are there?

Well, actually there is an app for that!

Bizzabo lets you discover interesting attendees and connects you with the right contacts for you. The app cross references your LinkedIn profile with other event attendees and suggests who will be the most beneficial contact for you; it truly socializes the event experience.

All you need to do is download the app and discover upcoming popular events in your area or use the search bar to find a specific event. Bouncy-ball cameras scout out dangerous situations

A CLUMP of cameras, electronics and LEDs packed into a rubber shell the size of a tennis ball could help firefighters or SWAT teams scout out the potentially dangerous environments they are about to enter.

Designed by Boston-based startup Bounce Imaging, the device contains six cameras. When the ball is thrown into an unknown area, the cameras take two photographs per second and send them to a smartphone or laptop, where software knits the images into a 360-degree view of the room. The cameras capture light in the near-infrared range, and the device comes equipped with infrared LEDs, allowing it to build a full panorama of a scene even if it is poorly lit.

Bounce founder Francisco Aguilar says the idea for the device came to him after the Haiti earthquake in 2010. He saw the need for a reconnaissance device that would be useful in environments like the damaged buildings of Port-au-Prince.

Bernard Hicks, a SWAT-team officer in a major US city, speaking in an unofficial capacity, says that the Bounce device is attractive because it's easy to use. And at a few hundred dollars, it's much cheaper than the existing technologies used to image the inside of unknown areas. This means officers won't have to worry about breaking the equipment.

Hicks says there's a growing trend for police officers to be asked to take on active shooters rather than wait for the SWAT team to arrive, and that Bounce can help them handle that situation. "Incidents with active shooters are so volatile," he explains. "Whether it's one officer or two officers on scene, this technology gives them the opportunity to know the dangers around the corner before they get to them."

Aguilar suggests that a future version of the device might have a Geiger counter to get initial readings on suspected radioactive areas.

The device is still a prototype, but Aguilar says the finished product will be tested by SWAT teams and Massachusetts police departments in January.

Ex-ace Lincecum gives Giants stellar relief

By RONALD BLUM

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:05 a.m. ET Oct. 28, 2012

DETROIT (AP) - Banished to the bullpen, a two-time Cy Young Award winner has become baseball's most distinguished middle reliever.

His dark, stringy hair flopping onto his shoulders, Tim Lincecum was the ace of the staff when the Giants won the World Series two years ago for the first time since 1954.

Following his surprising season-long slump, San Francisco dropped Lincecum from its World Series rotation. Given the chance to pitch in relief, he's thrown 4 2-3 hitless innings against the Detroit Tigers and helped the Giants to a 3-0 lead with another outstanding outing in Saturday night's 2-0 win.

"The second we got that ring, it's like that taste for that next ring is just sitting right in your mouth the whole time," Lincecum said before stopping himself. "That sounds terrible. Let me rephrase that. It just leaves you wanting it even more, and if that means being a good teammate or being in the bullpen, I really don't care. I just want to win."

Lincecum has faced 16 batters and struck out eight in the World Series. The only two Tigers to reach base were on a two-out walk and an error by shortstop Brandon Crawford.

Lincecum has tied Ron Taylor of the 1964 St. Louis Cardinals for most innings by a pitcher who didn't allow a hit in a single World Series, according to STATS LLC.

Not bad given that Lincecum calls himself "a safety-net kind of thing."

"He has relished the role. That's the biggest part of it, is he accepted it and really acted like he looked forward to helping the club in that role, and that's why I think he's having success," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He didn't waver on going to the bullpen. He said, `Yeah, I'd love to go there and help this team move forward."'

Known for his high leg kick and unorthodox delivery, the diminutive right-hander has simplified his mechanics during the postseason, jettisoning his windup and going solely from the stretch - even with no runners on base.

"It allows me to just think about one thing, and that's sight of the target," he said. "At times it can still get away for me and I can still think about the wrong things. But most of the times it works."

After winning the NL Cy Young Award in 2009 and `10, Lincecum slumped to 13-14 in 2011 and 10-15 with a 5.18 ERA this year, the highest among qualifying NL starters.

But Bochy had a hunch about Lincecum, because of "how quick he gets loose and also how resilient he is."

"We expected it because the manager has a knack for using guys where they can do damage to stop innings," Giants general manager Brian Sabean said.

The 28-year-old Lincecum gave up four runs and lost his only postseason start, in Game 4 of the NL championship series against St. Louis, but he's allowed just one run and three hits in 13 innings of relief over five outings. He's struck out 17 coming out of the bullpen, with a 0.69 ERA.

"That's obviously a pretty nice weapon for them," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.

Out in the bullpen, Lincecum gets to sit alongside bearded closer Sergio Romo, part of a colorful relief corps that's known for being loosey-goosey.

"He's got the long, wacky hair on the top of his head and not in his face," Romo said. "He definitely does fit in."

Yahoo's growth development process - Business - Em Quest?o ...

Beijing time September 8, according to foreign media reports news, "New York times" website article published today, points out the Internet industry is a leading once in the yahoo now is already in troubled situation. The following is for the New York times "website from the article: From the glorious to opportunities Yahoo in as the gateway website had a brilliant time, while yahoo once is the most visited site users. But, just as other companies have Internet industry into social networking and mobile equipment etc, yahoo failed to catch, finally only to today's difficulties situation. Yahoo's so pain finally revealed on Tuesday to come, in yahoo's board announced on Tuesday, suddenly fired chief executive officer of the company, carol buzz. Buzz has been key to promote yahoo online media and original news business, but ignored the development of new social networking tools, video services and mobile machine application to the attention of the business, and that is more like the service users use, and the result is, yahoo's defeat is not only the important problems in management, and more vivid description of yahoo issued in professional content sites from mobile phones and mobile network leading to the new digital world transformation process is also very failure. In such a new field, the user is the original content. Yahoo's problems and another was in the Internet industry has a popular forerunner of similar, that is America online (AOL). The two companies have agile use of the user change to the way the great opportunity-reading from the traditional to the network news newspaper important transition opportunities, but in the Internet users and advertisers to mobile phones and social network in transition, but have not effectively capture these opportunities. The two companies have to become a media company. At the same time, a new generation of companies, such as Google and Facebook, etc are able to take advantage of these opportunitie s, meet the user's information and entertainment request, they are no longer provide content, but create mobile and social networking services to attract users and those big advertisers. Yahoo display advertising advantage lack innovation loss According to the market Research institutions of digital marketing company Forrester analyst who Bosch, division (north Shar VanBoskirk cork () said: "yahoo has been hanging in a few years ago in the become giants among those areas. Yahoo think users will still to visit their site, but, today's users want to get the experience is more collaborative, so users can switch to mobile devices and common creation content." Division (north also said, as people use the Internet is changing the way, yahoo and aol "rolled around, not after all market and other companies the pace of development of". According to comScore, the company said yahoo's web site, such as yahoo home page, email service and financial and entertainment website, still keep a large number of users, the web site of the biggest single user traffic is still as high as 177.6 million, the Numbers just behind Google, but higher than Facebook. But, with the flow of yahoo, Google and Facebook is missing the popularity of the growing, and the user is spent on yahoo on time only about half the on on Facebook. Advertising users often tend to make them much more profitable to the object, such as intelligence, video web site users of mobile phones and social networking users, and those who can produce the company to its appeal. Yahoo in once in advertisement market is in extremely important leading position, it was important that the product is the advertising, this kind of advertising can display image and video, but Facebook and Google are thus, and gradually catch up with yahoo, its very important reason is because Facebook and Google can for advertisers provide more information about users and related personal information. According to research firm eMar keter digital marketing data shows that yahoo display advertising business market share has been three consecutive years of decline. Last year, yahoo display advertising market share has dropped to 14.4%, Facebook and Google is the same kind of market share to 12.2% and 8.6%, respectively. At the same time, eMarketer also is expected to this year, Facebook will with 17.7% share of more than 13.6% of yahoo. And next year, Google will to with a share of 12.3% and 12.5% of yahoo and Facebook, and difficult points of share will increase to 19.4%. Yahoo concept outdated flaw EMarketer company chief analyst David Hubble ord (David Hallerman) said: "yahoo still holds great flow, but, more and more advertisements customers is eyeing several goals." At present, the ads customer has been drawn to the Facebook users friends circle and Google users search, etc. Hubble, will also yahoo and user and the 1960 s some large circulation of the publication is compared, for example "the Life an d observation (kind of)-act. Comparison, when advertising clients from general magazine to those specific to celebrity news or golf magazine, the traditional publication will lose their vitality. To this, the Hubble mann said: "gateway website want to let all be satisfied the demand of the idea has been out of date." Some advertising executive also criticized yahoo, yahoo advertising the existence of the technology said defects. Almost every few months, advertising agencies must be taught how to use their new high tube yahoo account. The French Yang lion group's digital advertising agency Razorfish company in the western region of the President of business cristian ZuEr (Christian Juhl) said: "see yahoo will know, page flaws too much." In 2007, Google bought display advertising company DoubleClick, to compete with yahoo. Two years later, Google developed DoubleClick advertising Exchange (Ad Exchange), the advertising Exchange make both parties in advertising a trade more eff ective. Google an enduring image huge acquisitions or created market positioning tool, thus to service and optimize the network shows ads. In addition, Google also has the video site YouTube investment, in order to trying to attract users to switch to display advertising TV advertising service. Of the industry leading Media organization China and Asia (Horizon Media) with dispatch in Los Angeles office, vice President of digital business executive manager Julie unity, Berger (Julie borg said: "you can see Facebook and Google this company is eating into market share. Consumer habits of change, and yahoo has been and can effectively realize it." Yahoo has__4__ But, even if the Internet users began to change the way web surfing, began to use different ways, such as web surfing in different web sites and equipment reading news and content, such as yahoo and aol, the progress was very lags behind, as they are still in in the 1990 s, the golden age of creating some content that. T im Armstrong (Tim Armstrong) since 2009, has been a America online chief executive, he has an enduring image a huge sum of money, such as investment news and original news business. His biggest investment is earlier this year with the price of 315 million dollar acquisition "Hector fenton reaction of the post, o liana Arianna Huffington, Hector fenton reaction () started news and polymerization website. He also acquired technology blog TechCrunch, and through the cooperation with Patch way, began to develop the field of regional news, Patch in 800 DuoGe town have set up a reporter, let them write the town hall meetings, community crime and civil activities related to the news. But, with yahoo similar is, Armstrong need to handle the feelings of resentment shareholders questions, and claims a spin-off company or sold. America online has an investment bank and related lawyer, specializing in mergers and acquisitions, etc. America online Internet access continues to decline, th e number of users in its efforts to increase the overall advertising business measures not not work. A recent quarter, America online global advertising revenues increased by only 5%, and this is its in 2009 with time warner for the first time after the separation revenue growth, but it still losing money situation. Buzz in a yahoo chief executive has taken a similar measures, such as hiring dozens of journalists and bloggers, the network company merger eliminate, the company let by amateur journalists to report the news of a variety of subjects. Yahoo released in 2005 and the first social networks-yahoo, but the product development 360 has been disappointing. On Thursday the internal meeting held on yahoo, yahoo management and staff, common to the conference, yahoo management hope to employees to ensure, yahoo still will be able to create a better future. Yahoo co-founder jerry Yang says, fire chief executive position of the buzz, but decided to an unusually difficult yahoo should be more rapid growth. Jerry Yang said: "we're currently in yahoo in the history of the critical moment." That division (north, Bosch cork said: "advertising clients want to see a innovators, such partnerships can help advertisers understand and get the win consumers channel., yahoo's problem is that it's like an old players, never to think about the future development trend." 'Frankenstorm': Worse than sum of its parts

A person rides in a cart blown by the winds along the Altlantic Ocean in North Wildwood, N.J., Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, as the winds pick up ahead of Hurricane Sandy. From the lowest lying areas of the Jersey shore, where residents were already being encouraged to leave, to the state's northern highlands, where sandbags were being filled and cars moved into parking lots on high ground, New Jersey began preparing in earnest for Hurricane Sandy. Map shows predicted rain across the northeast

A satellite image of Sandy is shown at the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012. Early Saturday, the storm was about 335 miles southeast of Charleston, S.C. Tropical storm warnings were issued for parts of Florida's East Coast, along with parts of coastal North and South Carolina and the Bahamas. Tropical storm watches were issued for coastal Georgia and parts of South Carolina, along with parts of Florida and Bermuda. Sandy is projected to hit the Atlantic Coast early Tuesday. (AP Photo/Alan Diaz)

(AP) ? The storm that is threatening 60 million Americans in the eastern third of the nation in just a couple of days with high winds, drenching rains, extreme tides, flooding and probably snow is much more than just an ordinary weather system. It's a freakish and unprecedented monster.

How did it get that way?

Start with Sandy, an ordinary late summer hurricane from the tropics, moving north up the East Coast. Bring in a high pressure ridge of air centered around Greenland that blocks the hurricane's normal out-to-sea path and steers it west toward land.

Add a wintry cold front moving in from the west that helps pull Sandy inland and mix in a blast of Arctic air from the north for one big collision. Add a full moon and its usual effect, driving high tides. Factor in immense waves commonly thrashed up by a huge hurricane plus massive gale-force winds.

Do all that and you get a stitched-together weather monster expected to unleash its power over 800 square miles, with predictions in some areas of 12 inches of rain, 2 feet of snow and sustained 40- to 50 mph winds.

"The total is greater than the sum of the individual parts" said Louis Uccellini, the environmental prediction chief of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration meteorologists. "That is exactly what's going on here."

This storm is so dangerous and so unusual because it is coming at the tail end of hurricane season and beginning of winter storm season, "so it's kind of taking something from both ? part hurricane, part nor'easter, all trouble," Jeff Masters, director of the private service Weather Underground, said Saturday.

With Sandy expected to lose tropical characteristics, NOAA is putting up high wind watches and warnings that aren't hurricane or tropical for coastal areas north of North Carolina, causing some television meteorologists to complain that it is all too confusing. Nor is it merely a coastal issue anyway. Craig Fugate of the Federal Emergency Management Agency told reporters Saturday: "This is not a coastal threat alone. This is a very large area. This is going to be well inland."

Uccellini, who estimated that 60 million people will feel the storm's wrath somehow, said: "This storm as it grows and moves back to the coast on Monday and Tuesday, the circulation of this storm will extend all the way from the Midwest, the Ohio Valley, toward the Carolinas up into New England and southern Canada. It's really going to be an expansive storm system."

It's a topsy-turvy storm, too. The far northern areas of the East, around Maine, should get much warmer weather as the storm hits, practically shirt-sleeve weather for early November, Masters and Uccellini said. Around the Mason-Dixon line, look for much cooler temperatures. West Virginia and even as far south as North Carolina could see snow. Lots of it.

It is what NOAA forecaster Jim Cisco meant Thursday when he called it "Frankenstorm" in a forecast, an allusion to Mary Shelley's gothic creature of synthesized elements.

Cisco and others have called this storm unprecedented. Uccellini, who has written histories about winter storms, said the closest analogs are the 1991 Perfect Storm that struck northern New England and a November 1950 storm. But this is likely to be stronger and bigger than the Perfect Storm; it will strike farther south, and affect far more people.

In fact, the location among those with the highest odds for gale-force winds in the country's most populous place: New York City. New York has nearly a 2-in-3 chance of gale force winds by Tuesday afternoon.

One of the major components in the ferocity of the storm is that it is swinging inland ? anywhere from Delaware to New York, but most likely southern New Jersey ? almost a due west turn, which is unusual, Uccellini said. So the worst of the storm surge could be north, not south, of landfall. And that gets right to New York City and its vulnerable subways, which are under increasing risk of flooding, he said.

"There is a potential for a huge mess in New York if this storm surge forecast is right," Masters said.

Add to that the hundreds of miles of waves and the overall intensity of this storm, Uccellini said in an interview, and "we are in the middle of a very serious situation."

Forecasters are far more worried about inland flooding from storm surge than they are about winds.

There are several measures for hurricanes. And one NOAA research tool that measures the intensity of hurricane overall kinetic energy forecasts a 5.2 for Sandy's waves and storm surge damage potential. That's on a scale of 0 to 6, putting it up with historic storms, such as Katrina. It rates a much smaller number for wind.

Because of the mix with the winter storm, the wind won't be as intense as it is near the center of a hurricane. But it will reach for hundreds of miles, spreading the energy further, albeit weaker, meteorologists said.

Uccellini and Masters said they expect the central pressure of the storm to drop to a near record low for the Mid-Atlantic or Northeast for any time of year. That is a big indication of energy and helps power the wind. This puts it on par with the 1938 storm that hit Long Island and New England, killing 800 people, or the equivalent of a category 4 hurricane.

Working to Make the World a Healthier Place | Opinno

Opinno has previously profiled a number of startups that aim to make the world a better place from the perspective of health care and health management. Where do these sorts of entrepreneurs get their training and expertise, though? Today?s post attempts to answer that question by looking at a sampling of the most successful ? and perhaps most questionable ? health-based entrepreneurships out there. Writer Julianna Davies, who is an expert in what a healthcare MBA entails and how to get one, serves as guide.

As Schools Develop Healthcare MBA Programs, Graduates Work to Make the World a Healthier Place.

The development of a thriving company culture is one of the most important aspects of a successful startup company. Yet, culture is often overlooked among fledgling startups. As startup culture begins to take root in the health industry, development of an effective company culture could prove an effective aid for entrepreneurs looking to aid medical practitioners and patients.

There are many diverse examples of startup culture, though traits that are common among startups can often still be defined in relation to their more established corporate counterparts. Often, employees are drawn to work for startup companies because of the freedom and encouragement of innovation inherent in a business that is developing its business model and culture. Many find themselves stifled at large, risk-averse corporations with a lot to lose, but startups are usually more open to new ideas and more accepting failure. Small startups are also often more likely to acknowledge the achievements and ideas of individual employees, in many cases eschewing the top-down, centralized decision-making that can cause the pace of innovation to slow at larger companies.

While the freedom, encouraged innovation and acknowledgement many associate with startup culture is appealing to many, it comes with its share of disadvantages as well. Startup companies are usually working with limited capital, and as such, salaries are often lower than they would be at a large corporation, even while responsibilities are often increased. Stability is also rare, with many startup companies shifting focus or enacting necessary layoffs with little notice. However, there are a number of best practices that startup companies can adhere to to limit the necessity for tumultuous growing pains, with many reinforcing the importance of a focus on effective company culture.

Frank Addante, founder and CEO of online ad trading platform the Rubicon Project encourages startup companies to define their company values. These values are ?the guiding principles for how you expect your team to behave internally and externally,? he says. He also emphasizes the importance of establishing a development committee. ?Select a diverse group of people from every department (and office) in the company and challenge them to come up every week with a new culture idea that can also be implemented in a week. This creates momentum and constant improvement,? says Addante.

For years, health and medical-related startups have experienced slower growth than computer and technology focused companies, only receiving 3% of venture funding in 2010. Just the same, ?recent evidence suggests that that may change soon. Investment in the digital health space lead to more than 120 ?health tech? related startups receiving funding in 2011. However, in order to compete in the massive and extremely competitive US healthcare industry, health startups will need to demonstrate tremendous patience and an ability to consistently innovate.

One of the fastest growing health care startups is Retrofit, a Chicago based business tailored towards busy professionals who are struggling to lose weight without overburdening their schedules. Retrofit builds clients through a customized program led by a team of experts, a dietician helps break down and rebuild the client?s eating habits, and clients check in weekly via Skype video chat, eliminating the need to pair them with local coaches. Retrofit has found success largely by refusing to depend on a massive budget salesforce, but instead rely on its track record and referrals from satisfied clients. Retrofit CEO Jeff Hyman believes that Retrofit, with its culture of data-driven fitness programs and hard science, will soon lead to substantial changes in the personal fitness industry.

However, some health startups are already showing signs of flawed cultures that could lead to potential long-term issues. ZocDoc, a New York business that recently raised $90 million in capital, offers a program that allows users to set an appointment with a doctor, but some believe ZocDoc may already be overreaching in its marketing. ?There are lots of interesting debates about whether our health system is broken,? says David Whelan, Forbes health care writer, ?but I promise you that nobody having these debates has pinpointed the inability to get a doctor?s appointment as part of the problem.? Whelan calls this sort of hyperbole ?The Apple Effect,? in reference to the mission statement and lofty rhetoric of Apple and company founder Steve Jobs. ?There?s an unofficial requirement that tech companies can?t just build a great product. They also have to make the world a better place,? says Whelan. ZocDoc is already offering a service that many could find useful, but if they continue to make promises far grander than what they deliver, they may be causing long-term damage to their company.

While health care startups are in their nascent stage, there is no better time for their leaders to begin building an effective culture that attracts employees, investors and a users. Without a focused ideology from which to build a successful culture, even the most innovative companies can get lost in the labyrinthine healthcare business. However, in healthcare, the pool of clients is all but limitless, and those businesses that stand out can expect a long and mutually beneficial relationship between clients and company.

Travel Insurance Tips for Winter Ski Trips | Travel Insurance Advice

The peak of ski season is less than two months away, and many travelers are busy making plans for winter getaways. Because of possible disruptions associated with winter travel, it is always a good idea to consider travel insurance. ?For winter ski trips, there are a few points that travelers should note.

1. Weather benefits have exclusions: Many policies include weather coverage under trip interruption and cancellation benefits. This coverage will vary by policy, though, so travelers seeking this benefit should read policy details carefully. The most liberal language is ?covered for inclement weather.? This means that a traveler would be able to claim the benefit without a required time delay. Other policies may require common carrier delays or service cessation for a specified length of time. In other words, a traveler could not use weather benefits to cancel a trip just because the weather wasn?t optimal for skiing.

2. Ski/snowboard equipment may not be covered: In most cases, sporting equipment will not be covered by travel insurance policies. Baggage and personal items usually excludes sporting goods, unless a specific sporting equipment benefit is also purchased.

3. Emergency medical coverage is limited for hazardous sports: For those who will be traveling at least 150 miles from home and will need emergency medical coverage, ?a travel insurance policy may provide necessary coverage. However, most policies exclude activities such as skiing and snowboarding because they are considered ?hazardous sports.? In order to be covered for these activities, a traveler must purchase a policy that includes a rider for hazardous sports coverage.

Bear in mind that travel insurance could be a a great way to protect against the unforeseen, especially for expensive trips to ski lodges or private cabins. ?Travelers should be sure to note the aforementioned when purchasing a policy, and contact a Squaremouth representative with any other questions.

Canon announces Q3 2012 results: operating profit down 42 percent to $908 million

Canon announces Q3 2012 results, operating profit drops by 42 percent to $908 million

Canon just released its Q3 2012 earnings reported, and things aren't looking peachy right now for the camera maker: revenue is down 13 percent to $10.3 billion from last Q3 last year, while profit tumbled by 42 percent. The Japanese company directed the blame toward the "negative impact of economic deterioration" in Europe and emerging markets like China, as well as the strong yen (again). DSLR sales fell over last year, with Canon mentioning that its launch of new models like the EOS 5D Mark III didn't help to shore its camera figures up. Other units within the company didn't fare much better, with printer sales falling and business-to-business numbers flatlining. The company doesn't see a bright fourth quarter either, and is projecting that sales will stay in lockstep with the sluggish economy, resulting in a 6 percent decline in operating profit for the year. It may not want to count so much on the new mirrorless offering pulling it out of the mud, though -- it got fairly mixed reviews.
