NATO Sending Mixed Messages about Afghan Militias
Staff Sgt. Richard Rodriguez was on a mission. On March 27, the stocky military policeman from the U.S. Army?s 10th Mountain Division led a group of American and Afghan security forces on a foot patrol through the town of Baraki Barak, 50 miles south of Kabul. (See video above.)
Among Rodriguez?s goals: to identify young, male candidates for a new militia-style, neighborhood-watch program ? and enroll them in NATO?s biometric database for vetting.
Spotting one likely candidate, Rodriguez extolled the virtues of joining the so-called ?Afghan Local Police? as another soldier took the man?s photo and fingerprints. If the recruit signed up, he would join an estimated 5,000 other men already committed to wear the blue ALP uniform and stand guard in their own villages, armed with AK-47s and their intimate knowledge of the local people and terrain.
NATO and Afghan commanders both agree that these fresh forces can?t come soon enough. After no fewer than five attempts since 2001 to stand up inexpensive, minimally-trained local militia forces, the U.S.-led alliance is running out of time. The first of roughly 100,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan are slated to withdraw this summer, potentially leaving a huge gap in the country?s defenses.
But when it comes to training and leadership for the new patrolmen, there seems to be some confusion. Some U.S. and Afghan officers say the local police will be trained and led by Afghan National Police. But NATO?s top cop-trainer insists that?s not the case ? and only foreign Special Forces will have that responsibility.
The absence of clear plan could undermine the local-police program, at a stage of the war where there?s simply no time to try raising yet another pro-NATO militia.

Weekend Box Office: Fox's 'Rio' Grosses $286 Million Worldwide to Become Top 2011 Release
Twentieth Century Fox?s 3D toon Rio has become the top grossing 2011 release, ending Easter weekend with a new worldwide cume of $286 million. That easily bests Paramount?s Rango, which has earned just under $240 million globally.
Rio topped the box office chart both domestically and internationally for the weekend in a big win for Fox. In North America, the 3D toon grossed an estimated $26.8 million from 3,842 theaters in its second weekend for a cume of $81.3 million.
Overseas, Rio -- voiced by Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway -- grossed an estimated $44 million for a new international cume of $204.7 million. Rio opened two weeks ago internationally, a week ahead of its domestic bow on April 15.
Rio?s performance is helping to restore confidence in the domestic box office, which has been suffering the worst slump in years. Easter weekend was up a whopping 38% from a year ago (a non-holiday weekend), helping to narrow the year-over-year decline in box office revenues from 20% to 18%.
Coming in No. 2 domestically over Easter weekend was the latest offering from Tyler Perry, Madea?s Big Happy Family. The Lionsgate movie scored a solid $25.8 million from 2,288 locations in its debut, and?drew a pleasing A CinemaScore.
Big Happy Family posted a per screen average of $11,255, the best of any wide release, and pointing to Perry's core fanbase among African-Americans, who made up 81% of the audience. The film played great in urban markets including New York, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, as well as in the South, such as Atlanta.
"Tyler Perry has such a loyal following," Lionsgate president of theatrical distribution David Spitz said.?
Overperforming in its opening was Fox 2000?s period circus romance Water for Elephants, which debuted to $17.5 million from 2,817 locations. Based on Sara Gruen?s bestselling book and directed by Francis Lawrence, the film stars Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson and Christoph Waltz.
Water for Elephants drew an A- CinemaScore, and played heavily to adult women. Females made up 70% of the audience, while 70% were over the age of 25. The film?s successful opening is a win for Fox?s marketing team, which targeted fans of the book, as well as playing up the love story.
Placing No. 4 was Universal?s Easter bunny hit Hop. The CGI/live-action pic jumped the $100 million mark at the domestic box office, grossing an estimated $12.5 million for a new cume of $100.5 million. Overseas, Hop hasn?t had the same appeal, but has still grossed a solid $47.2 million for a worldwide total of $147.7 million.
"It is a great number for an adult film. When a movie shows emotion, that's what draws you in," Fox senior ?vice president of domestic distribution Bert Livingston said. "This really overperformed."
Dimension Films? Scream 4 came in No. 5 at the domestic box office, grossing an estimated $7.2 million in its second weekend for a cume of $31.2 million. The movie fell 62%, an acceptable decline for a horror pic.
Disneynature?s latest Earth Day documentary African Cats came in No. 6, grossing an estimated $6.4 million from 1,220 locations. African Cats also played well, drawing an A- CinemaScore.
A trio of strong holdovers took the next three spots on the box office chart. TriStar and FilmDistrict?s Bethany Hamilton biopic Soul Surfer, playing to young women and faith-based audiences, grossed an estimated $5.6 million for a cume of $28.7 million in its third weekend.
FilmDistrict?s micro-budgeted Insidious followed with an estimated gross of $5.4 million. The sleeper hit finished its fourth weekend with a cume of $44.2 million.
Smart thriller Hanna, from Focus Features and directed by Joe Wright, grossed an estimated $5.3 million in its third weekend for a cume of $31.7 million.
Among more limited offerings, Roadside Attractions' The Conspirator, directed by Robert Redford, fell 35% in its second weekend to come in No. 13, grossing an estimated $2.3 million from 849 theaters for a cume of $6.9 million.
The Metropolitan Opera's The Met: Live in HD continued to score top results, with Saturday's live broadcast of Richard Strauss' Capriccio grossing $2.1 million from 759 screens in North America. Overseas, 45,000 people watched the broadcast, which played on 300 screens in Europe and Latin America.
In the U.S., Morgan Spurlock?s new documentary Pom Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold got off to a soft startt, grossing an estimated $135,135 million from 18 theaters in a handful of top markets for Sony Pictures Classics. The pic?s per theater average was $7,506.?
Sony Classics scored the best theater average of the weekend with foreign film Incendies, which grossed an estimated $54,582 from three theaters in New York and Los Angeles for a location average of $18,195.
Focus Features? Jane Eyre approached $8 million over the weekend, ending the frame with a new cume of $7.7 million.

Madden NFL 12 Poised for Unprecedented Realism
NEW YORK ? With more than 90 million copies sold to date, EA Sports? Madden NFL series has garnered a legion of loyal gamers around the world since its 1989 debut. Always looking for authentic gameplay and attention to detail, these fans will get to experience an added dose of reality when Madden NFL 12 hits store shelves on August 30.
The latest Madden NFL iteration features a smorgasbord of additions that make the game truer than ever to the real thing, including players suffering on-field concussions.
Helmet-to-helmet hits have been removed from Madden NFL 12, but concussions are fair game. Madden NFL executive producer Phil Frazier told Wired.com the rate at which a virtual player sustains a concussion will mimic its likelihood in real life. To that end, EA Sports researched that each play during the 2010 NFL season contained approximately a 0.59 percent chance of a player getting concussed.
In the game, a virtual trainer will run out to help the concussed player walk off the field. As in the real world, the player won?t be permitted to return to action. A report several plays later will detail the injury, and in-game commentators Gus Johnson and Cris Collinsworth will review its impact. ?We?re not trying to teach about concussions and what they are and how to avoid them,? Frazier said. ?What we are teaching is that they?re serious.?
The sensitivity to concussions is joined with an all-new collision system in which player-to-player contact produces hits more reflective of the ones leveled on Sunday afternoons. It?s only fitting that bruising Cleveland Browns running back Peyton Hillis (seen above at today?s photo shoot) became the cover boy through fan-voting process in which Hillis soundly defeated Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, 66 to 34 percent, to grace the Madden NFL 12 cover. In the game, virtual Peyton Hillis can break any of the 100 new tackle animations, including 40 types of gang tackles.
Frazier said that in past versions, he and the dev team would pick collision animations by waiting for players to get within two or three feet of each other before they made contact. They would choose an animation based on the pursuit angles, speed, weight and other factors of each player. Yet a magnetic-like effect would bring them together once they were in that two-to-three-foot zone from each other.
?It didn?t look real,? Frazier said.
For Madden NFL 12, collision animations were chosen only once the players made initial contact,?for tackles, blocking and even catching. The result is more realistic collisions in which offensive players can break tackles and defenders can hold on until a teammate cleans up the hit.
In past versions, ?there were times you felt the play was over,? said Madden NFL art director Mike Young. ?I?ve been surprised that, all of a sudden, I?m free and I bounced off a guy because we have this extended period of time where we can figure out the right thing to do.?
The realism of each tackle ? nearly every player movement, for that matter ? will be delivered in part by EA Sports? customized camera technology called DCAM: a wireless, handheld camera system modeled after the technology used by director James Cameron in Avatar.
Two cinematographers from NFL Films worked on a 50-yard makeshift football field in EA?s studios to capture the camera angles found in television broadcasts. New player introductions, authentic team run-outs onto the field and mascot and cheerleader celebrations were shot with a cinematographer moving around the studio field as if it were the real thing, thanks to mo-cap sensors on the cameras.
?Instead of recording a player?s movement, we?re recording a camera?s movement,? Frazier said.
The in-game cameras follow players through pre-game introductory lines, from the sideline to the huddle after a timeout or change of possession and even post-game as the coaches run toward midfield to shake hands.
DCAM has been a technological feat three years in the making, according to Young, who recalled one scene where an NFL Films cinematographer moved on the faux field. Low-res versions of the game were being transferred onto the DCAM?s monitor so that cameramen knew where to move and who to film, and this one followed a coach toward midfield before losing him in the crowd of players. So, naturally, he ran to catch up to the virtual coach to ensure he filmed his embrace with the opposing coach, just like on Sundays.
?It was those moments,? Young said, ?where everyone in the studio was like, ?Oh my God, that?s awesome.??
On-field authenticity, such as uniform and field degradation from weather and improved defensive AI in which defenders communicate with each other, represent the bulk of the other new features in the game.
Frazier said Madden NFL?s fan base expect the game to serve as a realistic complement to the actual NFL. And given the uncertainty of the NFL?s labor situation, gamers may actually be able to use Madden NFL 12 as a substitute for the real thing this fall.

Rob Kazinsky Leaves 'The Hobbit Cast
SYDNEY -- British actor Rob Kazinsky, cast as the dwarf Fili, is leaving The Hobbit for unspecified personal reasons.
His departure, which was confirmed by both Hobbit director, Peter Jackson and Kazinsky through social media networks Facebook and Twitter on Sunday means the production will now have to recast the role of Fili, the second youngest of the company of dwarves in The Hobbit films.

Jackson said, ?I am sad to report that Rob Kazinsky, who was cast in the role of Fili, is having to leave The Hobbit and return home, for personal reasons. ?Rob has been terrific to work with and his enthusiasm and infectious sense of humour will be missed by all of us?
?
He added that there would be no interruption to shooting.
?
?I should say that Rob?s departure will not affect ongoing filming of The Hobbit, nor will it impact work done to date, as we had yet to film much of Fili?s storyline. At the moment we are shooting scenes featuring Bilbo without the Dwarves, which will give us time to find a new Fili. I?ll keep everyone posted with updates as they come," Jackson wrote.

Ghostbusters Star Speaks Out on Third Movie
Despite talk of a third Ghostbusters movie, star Ernie Hudson says he hasn't been approached about a role in the film.
Hudson, who starred with Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd in the first two Ghostbusters movies, told TMZ over the weekend that he's has yet to be contacted by anyone involved in the project.
"I haven't seen anybody with any money, but I hear it's happening, and I've been reading all the press stuff, and the fans have been telling me that it's on," Hudson said.
Ivan Reitman, who directed and produced the first two Ghostbusters movies, told The Hollywood Reporter last month that it's likely to be his next directorial project.
"There's a very good script that the other cast members have read and liked," he said. "We're just waiting for Bill Murray to read it."
And Aykroyd in December said he had already read the screenplay, calling it a "great script."
For his part, Hudson said he hopes to see the Ghostbusters crew return to the big screen.
"I have no idea and I'm not waiting for it, but I'd love to see it happen," he added.

Live at American Idol: Why Did James Durbin Storm Offstage After the Show?
After tonight's not-so-shocking American Idol elimination, we were kind of surprised to see James Durbin get as emotional as he did after the cameras stopped rolling.
While the eliminee seemed to accept his loss, James clearly wasn't happy with the results.
So what exactly happened?

Every Idol fan knew it was only a matter of time before Stefano Langone's?spotlight would go out. After repeatedly landing in the bottom three, it was obvious he wasn't a fan favorite. After Haley Reinhart was sent to safety and the show cut to commercial, Jacob Lusk didn't seem to know what to do. If he wasn't fidgeting in his chair or pacing around the Idol stage ignoring the screaming fans, he looked dazed, confused and totally lost that he was thisclose to losing his shot at Idol glory. Stefano, on the other hand, was totally relaxed. It seemed like he knew what was coming: He took time to hug Idol's stage manager and other production people and even wandered over to the couches where he and James embraced in one big, fat, bro hug. It was really cute and actually made us a little sad.?
As the results were read, James sat on the couch hunched over, his head in his hands. He couldn't even look up when Ryan Seacrest told Stefano his time on Idol was over. We even spotted James wiping away tears! He may be an edgy rocker on the outside, but he's truly an emotional guy and was honestly upset to see Stefano go. So much so that after the show ended, instead of lingering onstage with the other contestants, James took off without so much as a glance to anyone, head hung down, obviously disappointed with America's decision.?
Speaking of disappointment, want to know a secret? The Katy Perry "E.T."? wannabe Lady Gaga performance with a surprise cameo of Kanye West wasn't live. Because of the fancy lasers, lobster-skeleton-looking throne she was pushed around on and the choreography, it had to be taped after last week's performance show. We were there, and it took more than 40 minutes to set up, then Katy performed it three times. So when Ryan Seacrest announced Katy,? the entire Idol audience stood up to get a good look?only to be utterly confused and, dare we say, pissed that they weren't seeing Mrs. Brand in all her Top 40 pop glory.?

Teen Who Created OMGFacts Twitter Feed Sues, Claiming Swindle (Exclusive)
A story of the times: Teenager creates Twitter feed, OMGFacts, which publishes titillating tidbits about celebrities and pop culture. His tweets become so popular that he's approached by a digital development company that wishes to transform teenager's millions of followers into a lucrative entertainment channel on YouTube with merchandising potential. Now, the mother of the teenager is suing, saying OMGFacts' creator, Adorian Deck, has only gotten $100 for his efforts, while the company,?Spartz Inc., has grabbed control of the intellectual property.
In the years that Twitter has burgeoned into a popular social media platform, it has also become a good place for creative people to showcase their talent, leading to one Hollywood development deal after another.?No surprise then that the "Twitter Gold Rush" has prompted the same kind of copyright and accounting battles often seen in La-La Land.
According to a complaint filed by the Deck family in federal court yesterday, Adorian Deck, who turns 21 next month, created?OMGFacts?in 2009. The Twitter feed is now approaching 2 million followers with amusing factoids like, "J.K. Rowling chose the unusual name 'Hermione' so young girls wouldn?t be teased for being nerdy!" and "Weezer's first gig was opening for Keanu Reeves' band."
The Decks say that in February 2010, they were approached by?Emerson Spartz, who?sought permission to commence running a website and YouTube channel utilizing?the trademark. The parties signed a joint partnership agreement, which Deck now says "turned out to be nothing more than an?artifice of self-dealing."
The deal is said to have entitled Deck to profits for merchandising and a share of YouTube revenue, but allegedly didn't require Spartz to disclose those revenues. The contract is also said to have assigned Spartz Inc.??any copyright in any existing or future works" for OMGFacts.
Having only gotten a paltry $100 for his efforts, Deck is attempting to cancel the contract as "unconscionable and unenforceable," particularly because Adorian Deck was a minor. Deck is asking a judge for declaratory relief plus damages for unfair competition and false advertising.
Spartz hasn't responded yet to requests for comment.

In the major sports, stories about athletes' salaries generally draw derision and jealous reactions. In the case of mixed martial arts, fans probably have a more supportive stance for the fighters. The combatants aren't making a killing relative to athletes from the NFL, NBA and MLB yet they're putting their safety on the line.
According to ESPN the Magazine, the highest paid MMA fighter in 2010 was Lesnar at ONLY $5.3 million. Boxer Manny Pacquiao led the way in the other major combat sport at $32 million.
On the surface, that makes MMA look pathetic. Should MMA stars like Lesnar, Georges St-Pierre and Anderson Silva be making $15 million-plus a year? Maybe, but the argument from MMA promoters is that the gap between boxing's haves and have-nots is massive while MMA can boast of dozens of fighters making in excess of $500,000 per year.
The StarPhoenix's Dave Deibert points out that Lesnar is actually a bigger draw than 99.9 percent of the fighters in the modern history of combat sports:
Lesnar has recently become the biggest pay-per-view draw in the world. In 2010, he joined Mike Tyson as the only athletes to twice draw more than one million buys on pay-per-view in a single year ? Tyson did it three times in 1996.

Canadian Comic Fined for Crude Lesbian Jokes
TORONTO -- ?Canadian comic Guy Earle has been ordered to pay $15,000 to a woman and her same-sex partner after hurling a tirade of ?extreme homophobic and sexist? insults at them during a 2007 stand up performance, the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal has ruled.
Lorna Pardy filed a complaint after she and her partner were seated at a table near a stage at Zesty's Restaurant in Vancouver, even though they did not intend to watch Earle's comedy show.
?They did not heckle or otherwise disrupt the performance, but when Mr. Earle saw Ms. Pardy?s partner give her a kiss, he twice directed virulent insults exclusively at her and others at her table based on her personal characteristics as a woman and a lesbian,? the tribunal?s decision concluded.
The Tribunal concluded that Earle ?twice left the stage to angrily confront Pardy, only each time to receive a glass of water thrown in his face.
?When Ms. Pardy later went to the washroom to compose herself, Mr. Earle cornered her on her return, continuing to physically intimidate and verbally abuse her. He grabbed and broke her sunglasses, and dropped them to the floor at her feet,? the tribunal chronicled.
In a decision that could chill stand-up comics countrywide, the tribunal rejected Earle?s defense that he has a right to freedom of expression when performing his comedy routines.
?Nothing about Mr. Earle?s asserted purposes in verbally and physically attacking Ms. Pardy on the basis of her sex and sexual orientation justified elevating his right to free expression over her right under the Code to be protected against his discriminatory conduct,? the human rights body wrote in its decision.
Salam Ishmail, who owns and operates Zesty?s Restaurant, was ordered to pay Pardy $7,500.
Earle told the Vancouver Sun newspaper that he will appeal the human rights tribunal decision.

Don't Risk More Damage to Your Vehicle: Know the Right Routine for Safe Car Towing Before You Call
Many of us will, at some point, find ourselves in a situation in which we need to get our car or truck towed. If you've had a fender bender or if your car simply won't start, calling a towing company is often the only option available to get your vehicle off the road or to a repair shop. What many people don't realize, though, is that not all towing companies offer the same standard of service to their clients. There is a specific way in which cars and trucks should be transported when being towed. If it's not used, then it's highly possible that your vehicle will experience additional damage as a result of being moved. In order to avoid this, you need to know what questions to ask and what routine to watch for when you contact a towing company. Once you're armed with this information, you can be sure that your vehicle will get where it needs to go without further incident.
Due to the basic physics of the towing process, it's essential that vehicles be attached to flatbed tow trucks using what's known as the four-point tie-down technique. In basic English, this means that the car needs to be secured to the towing vehicle via four different anchor points. This allows the effort of holding the car in place to be evenly distributed while it's being towed. With four different points secured, there is not undue strain put on one end or on one side of the vehicle. It's also important that these anchor points are in the right place. You do not, for example, want your car to be secured by it's frame since applying force to the frame could damage it. Instead, the car should be secured by its wheels, either by straps or by a chain hook. These attachments should go around the wheel, never on the axle--again, this could damage the vehicle or, in the worst case scenario, allow the straps or chain to break or become unsecured.
Making sure that your vehicle is correctly attached by four points is the first step that you need to watch for. The next has to do with the tension of those attachments. Just as having your car or truck secured in four places is essential to its safe transport, so too is having equal tension on each of those four points. If the tension of the attachment between your car and the tow-truck bed is greater on one point than another, or on one side than another, this could twist your car's frame. A twisted frame means a major repair job, so make sure that your tow truck operator completes this step of the process. It's not difficult for experienced towing professionals to ensure that the pressure of the load is evenly distributed, but it does take a little more time, which is why a second-rate towing service may be tempted to skip this step.
Since most of us don't have to call a tow truck routinely, we may not know a towing company well enough beforehand to determine if they will do the job correctly. That's why it's essential to be an informed consumer before you find yourself in an emergency situation. If you need to get your vehicle towed, know what procedures and towing techniques to look for so that your car or truck arrives after transport in the same condition in which it was picked up.
