Obama signs condolence book at Norwegian embassy (AFP)

WASHINGTON (AFP) ? US President Barack Obama visited the residence of the Norwegian ambassador on Tuesday to personally offer his condolences after 76 people died in twin attacks.

Obama and Vice President Joe Biden visited the ambassador's residence to sign a condolence registry after the killings that have traumatized the Scandinavian nation, a White House official said.

"To the people of Norway -- we are heartbroken by the tragic loss of so many people, particularly youth with the fullness of life ahead of them," read Obama's message.

"No words can ease the sorrow but please know that the thoughts and prayers of all Americans are with the people of Norway, and that we will stand beside you every step of the way, Barack Obama."

They also handed over hand-written letters of condolence from First Lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden.

Obama and Biden met with the embassy's counselor for political affairs, Beritu Enge.

On Saturday, Obama condemned the "senseless" massacre in Norway as he presented his condolences to Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.

The White House said Obama called Stoltenberg to "express personally and on behalf of the American people his deepest condolences" over Friday's killings.

A lawyer for the accused gunman, Anders Behring Breivik, 32, who has claimed responsibility for Friday's bomb attack on the Oslo government and subsequent shooting spree on a nearby island, said Tuesday he appeared to be insane.

"He believes that he is in a war. And he believes that when you are in a war you can do things like that without pleading guilty," Geir Lippestad told AFPTV.
